I just finished cutting my CD version to match the stereo 45 edit. This edit doesn't appear to exist on CD, so I figured some of you might want to try this yourself. Some of the cuts involve weird overlaps, so I'll try to describe this as clearly as possible.

Start at 0:00 on the LP, and:

1 - At (0:43) fade out on the first two beats of "hard", while fading in "hard" at (1:18).

2 - At "hard", cut from (2:01) to (2:46).

3 - Cut from (3:55) to (4:39). (This sounds messy on the 45, with a double-drum hit. I can't replicate the messiness; this sounds too clean.)

4 - Cut from the downbeat at (4:54) to "Chestnut brown canary" at (5:10).

5 - Fade out the strum on the downbeat at (5:52), while fading in the guitar licks at (6:21).

Your finished edit list should have edits at 0:43, 1:26, 2:35, 2:50, and 3:33, ending at 4:35.

TM Century has their own edit on GoldDisc, but I checked it once with the actual 45, and I can confirm that it is close, but not quite right.

And some on this board have told me that the actual 45 was mono. I'm assuming a stereo edit was not issued.

Anyone who can confirm (Jim? Ed? Pat?)?

Doug, both my 1969 commercial and promo 45s had the single edit only in mono. All stereo 45 versions I know of have been created "custom edits", which can be achieved as Eric references above.

What appears on the reissue 45? I seem to remember that on my reissue 45, this side is a stereo edit while the flip side, Marrakesh Express is mono. Unfortunately I can't double check right now as I'm in the process of packing everything up and won't get to my 45s until i get the new boxes i ordered to house my 45s.
Live in stereo.

Nice catch, Tom. I also happen to have that "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes/Marrakesh Express" reprint 45. As you correctly recall, while both sides state "CSG Processed Stereo", "Suite:...." is, in fact, stereo, while "Marrakesh..." actually appears in mono. I haven't listened all the way through the "Suite:...." reprint 45 yet, to see if it sounds right to me, but it does state a time of (4:35).

I may have egg on my face -- I don't quite recall where my "stereo 45" source file came from, perhaps Skyline. I assumed it was that Atlantic reissue, but I can't verify that. If anyone wants to send me dubs of the mono and/or reissue 45s, I'm happy to double-check my findings for the board's edification.

Eric, I will shoot you out both my mono 45 and my stereo reissue 45 for your analysis, but probably not until the weekend. Sorry - it's the best I can do, sir.

Jim,

Is your reissue the older gold and black label, or the newer silver Atlantic oldies label? Reason I ask is I own a silver label reissue that is mono that I picked up maybe 15 years ago. I'm wondering if your copy may be a newer, revised edition by Atlantic (and may still be available some place)?
