I noticed in the 8th Edition, the song "Rumors" by Timex Social Club is listed in it's LP Version on a number of CDs. I own two of the discs listed as "LP Version"--Priority 9466 Rap's Greatest Hits and Rhino 72141 Billboard Hot R&B Hits 1986--and the versions are different on each one. They have two different vocal takes!

So, the question is, which one is the actual LP Version? Is one of these a 45 version or is it "neither the 45 or LP version"?

Rumors on the Priority 9466 cd is the LP version faded 1:05 early. Rumors on the Rhino 72141 cd is the 12" single version.

If the 4:41 version of Timex Social Club's "Rumors" on the Priority 9466 Rap's Greatest Hits CD is the LP version faded 1:05 early, then does this mean the full LP version has yet to appear on a domestic CD release? I ask because all CDs marked "LP version" in the 10th edition run between 4:41 and 4:52.

That's correct Todd, I have yet to see the full length album version of "Rumors" on cd in the U.S. The other comments about LP version will be corrected shortly in the electronic version of the book.

So, has the 45 version been issued on CD? My 8th Edition doesn't have the 80s Pop Culture Box listed (because it hadn't been released yet), but there is a 3:33 version on there. Is that the correct 45 version?

Yes, Aaron. According to the 10th edition, the Like Omigod! The '80$ Pop Culture Box (Totally) on Rhino 78239 does contain the 45 version of "Rumors".

my commercial 45 issued as jay 7001 states a run time on the label as 3:30 but actually runs 3:33 and is slightly slower than the version on the cd below

(S) (3:31) Rhino 78239 Like, Omigod! The '80$ Pop Culture Box (Totally) (45 version)

john just slowed the cd 45 version from the "omigod" box set down to the proper speed, but then i noticed that by doing this the song runs a few seconds long.....so in order to get the true proper 45 version you'll need to fade the slowed down verison out the last 0:12 from 3:20 to 3:32.....thus effectively re-creating the proper speed and fade.....if anyone need a wave copy of my re-creation, please let me know.....edtop40

Can the 45 version of "Rumors" be created from the 12" version that is commonly available on CD?

I just did a comparison, and the 45 is an early fade of the 12" version.

Listening carefully to the copy on Rapmasters 4, this is definitely a vinyl dub. On the fadeout, there is noticeable turntable rumble and light ticks.

Also, I'm convinced that the 45 version on the Rhino Omigod box set is also a vinyl dub (most likely of the 12" single and faded to match the 45). I can hear rumble on this copy, too, and occasional ticks/clicks throughout. Interestingly, the ticks are NOT in the same place on both copies, which further supports my theory that these are both vinyl dubs.

My copy of the "Give It Up" compilation is packed at the moment, but I don't remember being impressed by the sound quality of "Rumors" on this CD, either. Does a non-vinyl, good sounding source exist?

I gave a careful listen to the 12" single version of Timex Social Club's "Rumors" on the various artists CD Billboard Hot R&B Hits 1986 (Rhino 72141) in hopes that maybe this one was mastered from a tape source. Although the sound quality isn't bad, I do hear the occasional ticks and clicks throughout the recording on this disc (and it sounds like some noise reduction was also used to help reduce vinyl crackling). So I have a feeling this may be the case with all other 12" single version appearances on CD to date.

It strikes me as rather odd that master tape sources aren't being used for a 1986 hit. (Could the masters actually be missing??) I'm also wondering if the parent LP Vicious Rumors was ever issued on CD when it was first released in 1987? If so, I would think that HAD to have been mastered from tape if one ever existed. Then again, could we be dealing with another Nu Shooz "I Can't Wait" type situation here where vinyl crackling is present on the original source?

Vicious Rumors was released on CD in West Germany in 1986 but it
was also, of course, released on cassette in the US. It would be odd if
that wasn't from a tape source but I don't own either of those sources.

Above, it was stated that the version on the Omigod! box is slightly too
fast. Is the 45 slower than the 12" version as well? In other words, if
one were to take one of the commonly available on cd 12" versions and
fade it, is that all it needs to match the 45? Or would it also need a
speed adjustment as well?

I have studied the Omigod box set 45 version and the Rapmasters 12" version a little closer. There are ticks and clicks throughout, but I don't think they are vinyl ticks.

I also just received in the mail a few days ago a CD called The Dance Chart (import on Telstar Records, 1987). The sound quality of "Rumors" on this CD is significantly better than the Omigod box set. It's also better than the Rapmasters CD, IMO. There are no clicks/ticks to be heard, and the EQ is better.

Bringing this back. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Didn't Aaron say it was an early fade of the 12" version?

This video has the version that I heard mostly in our market (mostly in Buffalo, NY). Am I correct in assuming this is the LP version?

That's the 12" single version.

I'm left confused.

Could someone break down the available versions and
differences in a synopsis?

Thank you to anyone who has the time and knowledge!
