Thank you, that's exactly where I heard it! During the summer of 1984 I spent Friday and Saturday nights watching Night Tracks on TBS (didn't have access to MTV), and that was one of the clips they had in high rotation.

Rhino through Goldlegion is releasing a limited edition CD of Self Control with several bonus tracks including the 12" Self Control.

I've received my copy of the Laura Branigan Self Control CD reissued on Gold Legion 62392. Here's all the pertinent information regarding the Top 40 singles appearing on this disc:

Self Control (S) (4:06) (includes guitar introduction)

The Lucky One (S) (4:09)

Self Control (S) (5:03) (12" single version)

The Lucky One (S) (5:24) (This is listed as the "John Robie Mix". I'm not aware of this extended version ever having been previously released anywhere else.)

The Lucky One (S) (5:05) (This is listed as the "Jack White Mix", though I'm almost positive this is actually the 12" single version.)

The CD refers to the of "The Lucky One". And for anyone wondering, the audio levels are maximized and compressed like on most modern CD releases, which may come as a disappoint to audiophiles (like myself) who are picky about sound quality. However, the tracks are transferred from master tape which does make it worth finally having the 12" single version of "Self Control" on CD!

Paul, did you order this directly from Gold Legion?

Yes, Brian. By the way, I think there's a general misconception by some that the Gold Legion reissue of Self Control is only a limited pressing of 1,000 copies. My understanding is that the first 1,000 copies will come with a limited edition cardboard slip and that all subsequent copies will not. (Mine did come with one and in my humble opinion it really doesn't bring anything of added value to this release. The slip is simply nothing more than a redundant printing of the front and back album cover.)

I would have liked to have seen the 45 version of "Self
Control" without the guitar intro included on this new
release. My guess that will never get an official domestic
CD release now.

If you need a custom edited version, feel free to PM me. IMO, it's not a loss that the "Edit" version is not on CD. It's really bad sounding.

I have two Atlantic blue label promo 45's:

Deadwax ST-A46368-1 on both sides, listed as "Edit" with a printed time of 3:50; actual 3:53, Stereo both sides (7-89676)

Deadwax ST-A-46164-1 and ST-A-46164-2. Printed time 4:08; actual 3:56 Stereo both sides (7-89676). Additional deadwax says "Mastered at Allen Zentz L.A. Calif."

I know this has been one of the most frequently resurrected threads on the forum, but I've finally been able to listen to several vinyl LP copies of Laura Branigan's "Self Control". The LP run time is 4:06 and all copies I've heard contain the guitar introduction.

So unless someone can report coming across an LP copy without the guitar intro, then a case can be made that all database CDs running 4:05-4:06 could accurately be described as: "LP length, which includes guitar introduction".

Agreed, Todd. I don't think there is likely to be a copy of the LP with the guitar intro edited out. It looks like Pat has already updated the database to include "LP length" for 4:06 CD entries.
