Even though it didn't hit the top 40, I did pick up a promo 45 for "Why Me" from Planet P. LP version on one side and a
Edit/Remix on the other. Edit/Remix is listed as 3:29, but runs 3:16.

Bumping this up for NightAire, since I knew we'd discussed Tony Carey & Planet P here before...

Good news for those of us wanting "Pieces of Ice" on CD. All of Diana Ross' RCA albums are being re-released on CD in Japan next week. I just ordered "Ross" for around $16.50 US (though even the cheapest shipping from Japan was about five bucks, and takes around three weeks). But no bonus tracks on most of them, unfortunately. (I was really hoping for the remixes of Eaten Alive and Chain Reaction.)
Is the version of "Chain Reaction" found on the CD Greatest Hits - The RCA Years the first single release before it was remixed and re-released six months later (the remix charted higher in '86)?

Yes. The CD version is the original single version,
which ran about 3:51. (Hit #95 in Nov 1985) This is the
version that was a huge hit in Europe.

The single remix is labeled on the 45 as "Special New
Mix", but has the same catalog number as the original 45.
(The remix hit #66 in May 1986). The remix ran about
4:20, and is still absent from CD release, as far as I
know.

80smusicfreak, thanks for the heads' up; I had missed it!

eriejwg, what kind of condition was the single in? I'm still looking for a (likely never available) digital copy or a clean vinyl copy...

Gene, I'll send you a dub from my copy, which hadn't been previously played.

EXCEPTIONAL!!! It's a PERFECT copy, and I can now confirm this can NOT be re-created from the album version; it's a clean, dry, drums start. ("tuh-tah-tuh!", then the synths are brought in with the down-beat.)

Fascinating how you can't remember what was different when you heard a song on the radio... but when you hear the "real" radio version, there's this "ah-ha!" moment that reminds you "THIS is how it sounded." :)

THANK YOU. This community is just... amazing.

The 12" remix of Chain Reaction is on the CD "Best Club Anthems 80s Classics", so perhaps it can be edited down into the radio mix. Unfortunately, as I state in my review on amazon, they did something really odd to the intro of the song...added a sort of flange effect, which makes me think they may have mastered it from vinyl and were trying to hide a flaw in the quality of the record they used...

Probably should have chimed in earlier regarding "Why
Me"...

It's not just the intro that's different. The whole mix
is a little different. There isn't one particular
element that stands out, but the mix is just "punched up"
a bit for the 45. I tend to focus on drums in the mix,
and they sound a little bit different on the 45.
