I've got a few of the above:

Bill Black's Combo - Twist-Her & Ole Buttermilk Sky - "Hi Rollin' - The Story of Bill Black's Combo (1960-65)" - Cream / Hi HEXD-40 - original mono 45 versions

Barbara Mason - Sad Sad Girl - "Yes I'm Ready" - Bear Family BCD-16205-AH - stereo 45 version with surface noise (disc dub)

Tommy Roe - Susie Darlin' - "Something for Everybody - Hits and Rarities" - Golden Sandy Records [CD] GSR-90125

I purchased all of these at our local Circuit City store, so they must have seen legitimate U.S. release at some point.

Ace Records (UK) has several other fifties and sixties sides on its "Golden Age of American Rock & Roll", "Teen Beat" and "Early Girls" series - I picked these all up at my local hippie-run bootleg joint, but I've seen them languishing in the easy listening sections of Best Buy and Circuit City.

I'm sure you're aware of the gray-market Liberty Bell label series of most of the Cameo/Parkway stuff...

Sorry if I'm breaking the rules - just ordered my copy of the book last week.

Personally, I would add Barbra Streisand "The Way We Were" to that list, since the 45 version is a completely different vocal take from start to finish than has ever been released on CD.

Brian, "The Way We Were" is not available in its 45 version on cd as you point out but when I made up this list I included songs as appearing on cd even if it was the original LP version. There are others besides "The Way We Were" that are available in the LP version only and therefore not on the "missing" on cd list above.

I had an uncharacteristically slow day at work on Friday afternoon, so to kill time I rearranged Pat's list above alphabetically by artist along with song title and year of peak popularity. By contrast, his list is alphabetical by song title so now readers can cross-reference between the two lists. I also counted the number of titles missing on CD for each decade and have included the totals below:

"Pieces of Ice" was issued on CD on Diana Ross' "Ross" album from RCA. I'm almost positive it was a U.S. release, though it was pressed in Japan, as all early CDs were. I remember seeing it at Tower Records many times back in the day, and almost buying it. There's a copy right now on Half.com... for a cool $89!

Hopefully the '60s list will go waaaay down once (if) the Cameo-Parkway boxed set comes out, allegedly this spring.

Here's three from the 70s that I did not notice on your list.

Christine Sixteen (45 mix)-Kiss
Winners And Losers-Hamilton, Joe Frank, & Reynolds
Soul Train '75-The Soul Train Gang

Hi, Grant:

The lists reflect songs that have never appeared on a domestic CD release in any form. Because "Christine Sixteen" has been issued on CD quite a number times in its LP version, it was not included on the list of songs missing on compact disc. Interestingly, Pat acknowledges the actual 45 version run time of "Christine Sixteen" in the 10th edition of his book but doesn't specifically indicate if it's a different mix than the LP version...

"Winners and Losers" by Hamilton, Joe Frank, & Reynolds is actually on the list...

"Soul Train '75" by the The Soul Train Gang doesn't appear as an entry in the 10th edition, presumably because it was never a Top 40 hit (in fact, it only peaked at #75 on the Billboard Hot 100).

Brian W. is correct regarding "Pieces of Ice" by Diana
Ross. The hit's 1983 parent album, "Ross", did indeed
come out on CD here in the U.S. at that time. Label & no.
was RCA 4677. Like the Martin Briley album that I
mentioned in another thread, it was one of the first U.S.
releases on CD. (RCA and PolyGram led the way w/ CD
releases circa 1983-84; don't forget that West Germany
was the other country that manufactured our CDs prior to
'85.) Although I don't have the CD, I've seen a couple of
used copies in my record-store travels over the years,
and due to its rarity, I know it goes for big $$$
whenever it turns up on eBay nowadays (again, just like
the Martin Briley). And sure enough, a check of my old
"Schwann" catalogs from the mid to late '80s also shows
the "Ross" album as being available on CD at the time -
so we can definitely scratch "Pieces of Ice" as well!

Also, didn't Pat recently strike Lindisfarne's 1978 hit,
"Run for Home", from the list??? (For some reason, it's
still on the one above.) He claimed the song's original
parent album, "Back and Fourth", was just re-issued on CD
here in the U.S. for the first time. I've always loved
that album, and would like to track down the CD myself -
but admittedly, I'm having some trouble finding it. (All
the other listings I've run across still show the album
as only being available on CD as an import!) So does a
U.S. CD of that one now exist or
not???

Regarding the Lindisfarne cd "Back And Fourth", I just double checked my cd to be sure it was a domestic cd and it is, issued by Castle Music America with catlog number 72246.

If anyone has the Diana Ross cd "Ross", let me know the running time of "Pieces Of Ice" and I will add it to the next edition of Top 40 Music On CD. I have found the catalog number so it truly was a US issue and belong in the book.

Same for the Martin Briley cd "One Night With A Stranger" if anyone has this cd then pass along the running time of "The Salt In My Tears" and I will add that to the database as well.

I have taken the liberty of removing Pieces Of Ice by Diana Ross and Run For Home by Lindisfarne from my list that started this thread as well as Todd's list which sorted the data by artist. I say this just so there is no confusion for new readers browsing this thread.

Good news for those of us wanting "Pieces of Ice" on CD. All of Diana Ross' RCA albums are being re-released on CD in Japan next week. I just ordered "Ross" for around $16.50 US (though even the cheapest shipping from Japan was about five bucks, and takes around three weeks). But no bonus tracks on most of them, unfortunately. (I was really hoping for the remixes of Eaten Alive and Chain Reaction.)

Anyone know if Johnny Desmond's "Yellow Rose of Texas" or David Carroll's "Melody of Love" have shown up on any import CDs?

After seeing your reply above, Pat, I was finally able to
find a local store that had the U.S. re-issue of "Back
and Fourth" on Castle Music America 72246 listed in their
computer. They told me that since it was in their
database, and was not shown as being out-of-print, they
could special-order a copy for me from their distributor
- and since the label & no. matched the info you gave
above, that's what I had them do...

Well, the CD just came in, and this is what I got: The
one that arrived is actually a U.K. import pressing of
"Back and Fourth" from 1999 on Castle Music ESM CD 811 -
BUT, the back of the jewel case has a new UPC (bar code)
sticker placed over the original U.K. bar code that's
printed on the back insert, and that sticker has the U.S.
bar code w/ the "72246" catalog no. in it! So my question
is this: Is your copy of "Back and Fourth" simply a
stickered U.K. pressing like mine, or a true U.S.
pressing??? The store charged me the $11.98 U.S. list
price for the CD, so it must've come through the domestic
pipeline, as I wasn't about to pay the typical $20-$30
that most import CDs run...

Also, while ordering the "Back and Fourth" CD, I
uncovered some additional info: Although I don't have it,
it seems that in 2000, the Castle Music America label
also released a 2-CD collection on Lindisfarne titled
"Anthology", which also included their top 40 hit, "Run
for Home". (The collection features live versions of
their early to mid '70s hits on Elektra, but the late
'70s and early '80s tunes - including "Run for Home" -
are all the original recordings.) So "Anthology" will
need to be added to your book under "Run for Home" as
well, although it's apparently now out-of-print! Full UPC
code is 602923662220, which I assume makes the catalog
no. "36622"...

80smusicfreak - Yes my "Back And Fouth" cd is also stickered on the back to indicate the US distribution number and yes I have included the "Anthology" cd in my data base as well.

Okay, I found Johnny Desmond's "Yellow Rose of Texas." It's on a US Reader's Digest comp called "A Celebration of American Folk Music," 2001, Sony Music Special Products A4 52392 C-162C (or C-162B, which is what's on the back -- the C-ending is on the spine).

It's mono, and it says "Courtesy of MCA Records under license from Universal Music Enterprises." MCA bought up Coral, the label of the original record, in the 1960s, so it's the right label. So I'm assuming it's the original version. And if it's a re-recording, Reader's Digest will usually say so in the booklet, but no such mention here.

The disc is still available to order from Collector's Choice, but it's really expensive -- about $60 for a 4-disc set.

Because it's now been 2.5 years since Pat originally posted this list here (and Todd was kind enough to re-arrange it by decade), I thought this old thread was worth revisiting, especially for those (like myself) who have yet to subscribe to Pat's database...

Would somebody be kind enough to update the list??? (I nominate Todd, lol.) Just looking at the '80s songs, we know that Wounded Bird has since made the Michael Sembello and Patrick Simmons hits available on CD, and we've also revealed that back in '86, the "American Anthem" soundtrack from which the Andy Taylor hit came was also issued on CD in the U.S. (but is of course long out-of-print!)...

As an aside, I do have Tony Carey's "The First Day of Summer", Eddie Schwartz's "All Our Tomorrows", and Pia Zadora's "The Clapping Song" on CD, but all of those are definitely imports, and I'm not aware of their appearance on any U.S. CDs to date...

However, there are two other likely deletions that we can make from the '80s: Dr. Hook's 1982 hit, "Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk", and Agnetha Faltskog's 1983 hit, "Can't Shake Loose". That is because my old "Schwann" catalogs from the mid '80s show that the original parent albums for both of those hits were indeed issued on CD here in the U.S. back in 1983-84: "Players in the Dark" by Dr. Hook (Casablanca 800 054), and "Wrap Your Arms Around Me" by Agnetha Faltskog (Polydor 813 242). This is also backed up by the web site, www.bsnpubs.com. Of course, both of those CDs would've been pressed in West Germany for the U.S. market, since the U.S. didn't open its first CD pressing plant till '85. I loved "Can't Shake Loose" from the first time I heard it on top 40 radio back in '83, and bought Faltskog's album on cassette immediately; by the late '80s, I'd picked up "Players in the Dark" on cassette as well (still have both to this day) - I don't have either on CD, though, and I imagine those original pressings are quite rare, but they should be added to Pat's database, nevertheless...

In addition, I do have Cliff Richard's 1981 hit, "Give a Little Bit More", on a U.S. CD - but admittedly, it appears to be one of those "gray area" releases. The song was included on 2003's "30 Years of Hits", an excellent 25-track collection of CR's best, topping even 1994's "The Cliff Richard Collection (1976-1994)" on Razor & Tie 2039 (which I have as well). In fact, "30 Years of Hits" features all 10 of CR's U.S. top 40 hits by Pat's standards, including 1959's "Living Doll" and 1964's "It's All in the Game", which are two others that Pat claims in the 10th edition of his book have yet to appear on a U.S. CD. "Give a Little Bit More" runs (3:17) on the CD, just as claimed on the back insert - (2:36) for "Living Doll" and (3:09) for "It's All in the Game". Label & no. of the CD is Powder Blue CD-7844, and "Made in U.S.A." is clearly printed on the back insert, along w/ a UPC (bar) code; the disc itself has a silver playing surface and excellent sound quality, too. (The front booklet lacks any credits or liner notes, though.) And although I obtained my copy through eBay a while back, "30 Years of Hits" is available new directly from Amazon, at a price of $23.98, so Pat (and others) may want to investigate this one further...

For those that are subscribers to the database, you can easily do a search by whatever year range you select to find the songs that are not on cd in the US. On the home page, under title search, simply select your year range and for "on cd" select no and then click on search.

The results by decade are as follows:
1955-1959 91 songs
1960-1969 56 songs
1970-1979 34 songs
1980-1989 24 songs
1990-1999 2 songs
2000-2006 6 songs

This comes as very interesting news, Gregg, because I've been searching for "All Our Tomorrows" and "The Clapping Song" on CD for quite some time, but I've never run across either on a digital format. I've even searched on www.allmusic.com and have found nothing. Could you kindly tip us off as to where to find these elusive hits on CD?

No problem... :-)

"All Our Tomorrows" is on Eddie Schwartz's 1994 CD, "Private Life (Best Shots)", from Germany. Label & no. is Long Island Records LIRC 00014. CD comes w/ deluxe packaging, including a plastic slipcover, bonus fold-open insert/poster w/ liner notes, and gold-lettered jewel case! It was a limited-edition pressing of just 2,000 copies, each individually numbered on the previously-mentioned insert/poster. Long out-of-print and needless to say, fairly tough to find (currently goes for about $20-$25). It's actually a hits collection of his '80s recordings. "All Our Tomorrows" runs (5:17), and is thus the LP version (Whitburn's "Pop Annual" states the 45 times out to just 3:58). "Private Life (Best Shots)" also includes his two other U.S. hits, "Over the Line" and "No Refuge"...

"The Clapping Song" is on Pia Zadora's 1984 CD, "Let's Dance Tonight", from West Germany (also pressed in Japan, too, BTW). Label & no. for the German version - the one I have - is Curb Int. 847.716. Also long out-of-print and fairly tough to find (currently goes for about $30-$35). The album was actually re-titled "When the Rain Begins to Fall" when released in the U.S. in 1985 on Curb/MCA 5557, w/ the same cover art & track listing (but only issued on LP & cassette here - and yes, I have the U.S. cassette). "The Clapping Song" runs (3:23), which actually matches the timing given in Whitburn's "Pop Annual", so I'll go out on a limb and say it's the 45 version. :-) "Let's Dance Tonight" also includes her two U.S. hits, "Rock it Out" and "When the Rain Begins to Fall" (duet w/ Jermaine Jackson), but curiously, not "I'm in Love Again" as well...

I'm surprised no one (as far as I know) ever mentioned that Barry Gibb's Now voyager album including Shine shine was released in the USA on MCA 5506. Although the CD reads "manufactured in Japan" I understand this is a US release. By the way, MacMacnally's Nothing but the truth with Minimum love is available through this website www.richardsandsouthern.com (this is an official release I understand).

Half of the songs on the 80s list and many from the 70s that have never been released in the US are available through imports (Beach boys medley, S. Woods, Photoglo, Persuaders to name a few). If anybody's interested let me know and I can give more details, as I have all those CDs.

Hi "rnell",

Yes, I am interested in your list of difficult-to-find 70s & 80s chart hits on import CDs!

Please omit anything that you feel 'sounds like it doesn't come from a tape'. There is nothing more annoying than paying top dollar for an out-of-print import that is a needledrop as I own the vinyl already.

Thank You!!

Andy

Where are you guys getting Cliff Richard having a US hit with "Give A Little Bit More"? It's not in my book. I believe it's actually the UK song "Never Say Die" which looks like it was released in the US as "Give A little Bit More". But neither title show up in my book. It shows Cliff having 9 Top 40 hits.

"Give A Little Bit More" peaked at #36 in Cash Box and at #41 in Billboard in 1981.

"Never Say Die (Give A Little Bit More)" peaked at #73 in Billboard and at #78 in Cash Box in 1983.

Two totally different songs.

Even though they may not be on domestic CD, and I know that's the focus of this site, a quick check at Napster.com reveals these are currently available:

1970's:
Fancy - Touch Me (on Wild Thing/Turns You On)
Fancy - Wild Thing (on Wild Thing/Turns You On)
Heatherton, Joey - Gone (reissue of 1972 LP)

Pat wrote about Fancy's two Top 40 hits debuting in the U.S. on CD in the "Reviews" section of the website back in April. He reports though that the CD sounds like it was mastered from vinyl.

Oh yeah I see now. It's a track off the "I'm No Hero" album which wasn't released as a single in the UK. I don't bother with Cash Box hits myself.

Good catch, rnell. I remember seeing the CD for "Now Voyager" a few times on eBay in the past, but never got around to double-checking whether or not there was a U.S. release for that one on CD back in the day. (I have the cassette myself.) So I just did, and sure enough, my old "Schwann" catalogs from the mid '80s do indeed indicate that that title was issued on CD here in the U.S., w/ the "MCAD-5506" number. (And yes, as long as that catalog no. matches - as you indicate - that Japan pressing of yours was indeed made for the U.S. market!) Therefore, Pat can definitely scratch "Shine Shine" as well...

If anyone owns the original Agnetha Faltskog cd "Wrap Your Arms Around Me" (not the imports which are readily available today), pass along the running time of "Can't Shake Loose" and I will enter the information in the database.

Same for the original Dr. Hook cd "Players In The Dark" on Casablanca 800054 - if you have this cd and can pass along the running time of "Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk" I will enter it in the database.

And the same for the Barry Gibb cd "Now Voyager" MCA 5506 - if you have this cd pass along the running time of "Shine Shine" and I will enter that information in the database.

'The Beach Boys Medley' was issued in the U.S. in 2003 on the four track CD, Sounds Of Summer Singles. It contains a production error, however, causing something weird to happen to the speed of the tape near the end of the fadeout. It is therefore technically not the 45 version.

When Pat first posted in this thread the list of songs still missing on CD, the Top 40 Music on Compact Disc database had not yet been constructed. But now that the database exists and paying subscribers can now easily pull up a list of songs not available on CD, I haven't thought it necessary to go back and spend all kinds of time updating Pat's original list. To remind subscribers of how to access a current list of songs not available on a U.S. CD release, simply go to the main page of the database search engine where it says "TITLE SEARCH". Then underneath where it says "ON CD", click the button next to the "N" option, then click "SEARCH" and, voila, a never-before-on-CD list of Top 40 hits instantly appears!

I pulled out my copy of the four track CD containing "The Beach Boys Medley" and it does indeed sound like the tape source begins "dragging" at the 4:01 mark (the song fades completely out at 4:08). I've never been particularly impressed with the mastering of this CD either because the dynamic range is largely lost due to overcompression of the audio levels.

Pat, I have just pulled out and timed my promo 45 for this. One side has a listed time (4:30); actual time (4:42) length, while the other side has a listed time (4:13); actual time (4:15) length. No long/short version designations appear anywhere on the DJ 45, even though that is obviously the case here.

Okay, I put my money where my mouth was, and just acquired an original (used) CD of "Players in the Dark" by Dr. Hook. (This one's definitely a toughie; it set me back $60!)

Interesting situation here. For starters, although the vinyl LP & cassette were both issued on Casablanca 7264 in early 1982, by the time the CD version came out in 1983-84, the Casablanca label was no more, and PolyGram had also switched to a more universal catalog-numbering system. Consequently, the CD & inserts all actually bear the "Mercury" name & logo - not Casablanca, as my sources indicated - but the catalog no. itself is indeed 800 054-2. And as I predicted, the CD is a West German pressing for the U.S. market, since there weren't yet any CD-manufacturing plants Stateside at the time...

That said, printed time on the back insert for "Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk" is (3:46), and surprisingly, that's just what it actually runs! However, it turns out the new "Greatest Hooks" collection fades the song early, to just (3:40). Also, in his "Pop Annual", Whitburn claims the 45 version runs (3:39); since I don't own the 45, I have no idea whether that's accurate, or if it's a different mix from the LP/CD version. All I can say for sure is that based on the lyrics, the "Greatest Hooks" version is the "Players in the Dark" version faded about six seconds early. I'll let the folks w/ the excellent 45 collections here sort out the rest...

I don't usually pay this much for CDs, but I guess I can also have the satisfaction of now owning the group's final pop hit, "Loveline", on CD - a song that was omitted from "Greatest Hooks"... :-)

While most folks here lately seem to be focused (obsessed???) on the CD release of some hit 45 versions by the likes of Eddie Money and R. Dean Taylor (full disclosure: yes, even *I* bought the new EM and H&O "Playlist" CDs from Sony/BMG for the rare "45 versions" that they included!), alas, no one has yet to mention that on May 13, Tony Carey's 1984 hit, "The First Day of Summer", actually made its U.S. CD debut in either form...

It's included on Carey's new hits collection, "A Lonely Life - The Anthology", on Renaissance RMED-353 (printed on the disc itself as "RMED-0353", so take your pick). I have the CD, and the actual timing for "The First Day of Summer" is (3:43); although I don't own the 7" single myself, according to Joel Whitburn's "Hot 100 Annual", the 45 version/length is "(3:28)", so this appears to be the LP version/length...

I've been a huge TC fan since 1983, when I first heard Planet P's "Why Me?", and his fantastic follow-up solo album the very next year, "Some Tough City", sealed it. (As indicated in an earlier post, I've had the latter - which was the original parent album of "The First Day of Summer" - on an import CD for years now. Renaissance label owner John W. Edwards' liner notes in "Anthology" state, "Several more of TC's solo albums are being re-released in North America during 2008 and 2009...," so it appears that we will FINALLY be seeing the U.S. CD debut of "Some Tough City" shortly!) While Renaissance has been known to issue second (later) pressings of some of their CDs on CD-R, the new hits CD is a factory-pressed disc, and included the involvement of TC himself. Of course, it does include his other U.S. top 40 hit, 1984's "A Fine Fine Day" - which is also hard to get on CD - and it clocks in at (4:23). (Both the 45 & LP versions reportedly run "4:24", so I assume they're the same???) In addition to his several other lesser pop & AOR hits, as an added bonus, "Anthology" also includes most of his hits as lead singer of Planet P Project! This new CD doesn't quite measure up to the home-made cassette that I recorded of his solo & Planet P material some 15 years ago, but a welcome release from another very underrated '80s act, nevertheless. (Mariah who???) :-)

The 45 of "The First Day Of Summer" does indeed run 3:28. To help determine if the 45 is an edit or simply a shorter length compared to the LP, here's some details about the 45:

(0:24) vocals start (first verse)
(0:57) chorus
(1:47) verse
(2:04) bridge
(2:36) chorus repeated several times to fade

The 45 of "The First Day Of Summer" is an edit of the LP version. I don't have either in front of me now, but I know that the intro is shortened on the 45. There's a well-done edit in the intro on a snare hit that links a piano roll (before the edit) to a snare/crash cymbal (after the edit).

I have the 45 and promo 12" at home - I'll dig them out tonight.

BTW, I think there has been an earlier Tony Carey greatest hits CD, although it may have been available only through Mr. Carey's website. Don't have it myself.

Also BTW, the 45 of Planet P's "Why Me" is a different mix than the LP version. I have the Geffen release of the full Planet P CD, but I haven't seen the 45 version on CD.

At one time or another, yes. But inexpensive and easy to find today??? In most cases, definitely not...

The one other TC CD that I have at this time is the import from 2000 titled "Retrospective: 1982-1999", which is now out-of-print; I obtained it used through eBay last year, and it wasn't that cheap...

There have indeed been at least three previous TC hits CDs released - including "Retrospective: 1982-1999" - but all have been imports. (Even the promo sticker affixed to the shrink-wrap on the front of the new "Anthology" CD from Renaissance boasts the following: "First ever U.S. 'Best Of' Compilation".) I don't know if any of those were offered exclusively through his web site or not, but bear in mind that while TC's American, he's lived in Germany for years now, and as such, his official web site is also based there. Frankly, I was always pretty disappointed w/ the track selection on all of those imports - and while not perfect, the new Renaissance CD is by far the best of the bunch, IMHO...

Quote Also BTW, the 45 of Planet P's "Why Me" is a different mix than the LP version. I have the Geffen release of the full Planet P CD, but I haven't seen the 45 version on CD.

"Why Me?" clocks in at (4:04) on the new "Anthology", so it's the LP version. I'm not aware of the (3:29) "45 version" appearing anywhere on CD to date, either. (Yep, I also have the domestic "Planet P" CD, as well as "Pink World", which has still only ever been available as an import - great stuff!)

Yes. The CD version is the original single version,
which ran about 3:51. (Hit #95 in Nov 1985) This is the
version that was a huge hit in Europe.

The single remix is labeled on the 45 as "Special New
Mix", but has the same catalog number as the original 45.
(The remix hit #66 in May 1986). The remix ran about
4:20, and is still absent from CD release, as far as I
know.

EXCEPTIONAL!!! It's a PERFECT copy, and I can now confirm this can NOT be re-created from the album version; it's a clean, dry, drums start. ("tuh-tah-tuh!", then the synths are brought in with the down-beat.)

Fascinating how you can't remember what was different when you heard a song on the radio... but when you hear the "real" radio version, there's this "ah-ha!" moment that reminds you "THIS is how it sounded." :)

THANK YOU. This community is just... amazing.

The 12" remix of Chain Reaction is on the CD "Best Club Anthems 80s Classics", so perhaps it can be edited down into the radio mix. Unfortunately, as I state in my review on amazon, they did something really odd to the intro of the song...added a sort of flange effect, which makes me think they may have mastered it from vinyl and were trying to hide a flaw in the quality of the record they used...

Probably should have chimed in earlier regarding "Why
Me"...

It's not just the intro that's different. The whole mix
is a little different. There isn't one particular
element that stands out, but the mix is just "punched up"
a bit for the 45. I tend to focus on drums in the mix,
and they sound a little bit different on the 45.

In the last few months, a number of "lost" 80s tunes have been popping up on iTunes. In addition to "Shine Shine" by Barry Gibb and "Boys Do Fall in Love" by Robin Gibb, the following songs are now, finally, available on iTunes as well:

Don't Give it Up-- Robbie Patton
If I Had My Wish-- David Lasley
That's Love-- Jim Capaldi
So Wrong-- Patrick Simmons

Without looking at the db, I think all of these songs are otherwise available on cd, but the cds on which these songs appear are long out of print and ridiculously expensive on the secondary market.

"Don't Give It Up" wouldn't be in the database. It only exists on an import CD from France, and was taken from vinyl, and the software used to clean the recording took the life out of it (and the music out of it). It's the least-bright recording I've ever heard, and if you turn the treble up to 10, it's still the least-bright recording ever heard.

I looked at the very first post in this thread - from Pat - listing the songs that had yet to appear on CD. I specifically looked at the '70s and '80s titles, and since this list was created nearly 10 years ago, I was curious to see how many '70s/'80s hits have since appeared on domestic CD since then. I was VERY surprised to see how little there was that's since been released in the past decade!

Time flies! October 12 will actually mark the 10th anniversary of this chat board - well, since it was opened to folks outside of Pat's administration, anyway - and I joined two days later, on 14 October 2004. (Had just purchased the 10th edition of Pat's book weeks earlier.) I remember this thread well. :-) So because it has now (for argument's sake) been a full decade since Pat left the list in the very first post in this thread on 05 February 2005, and because the '70s & '80s are by far my two favorite decades of interest as well, after reading your post, I decided it would be fun to go ahead and crunch the numbers, just to see how much merit your surprise/disappointment had. (And heck, since I've finally become a registered user of the on-line database, I could actually look up the current listings, so why not put that new access to some good use, lol...)

After a detailed analysis of all the titles from the '70s & '80s, the numbers are in, and they're actually fairly decent, IMO. (Drum roll...) It turns out 18 of the 39 (46.2%) top 40 hits from the '70s that were unavailable on U.S. CD ten years ago have since made their debut, along w/ 10 of the 24 (41.7%) top 40 hits from the '80s. So combined, that's 28 out of 63 - or 44.4% - that we've been able to scratch from the era you specified. (Hardly my definition of "little", but your mileage may vary.) By far, the most credit goes to the Wounded Bird label for filling in the largest number of gaps from this period, w/ nods to Eric, Renaissance, and Collectables as well. We're now down to just 35 songs from the '70s & '80s that are still MIA on U.S. CDs...

In chronological order, as of February 2005, this was the complete list of 63 missing songs dating from the '70s & '80s, w/ the 28 that have since made their U.S. CD debut shown in bold, complete w/ where & when:

I must thank Todd Ireland for an assist in this, as his post from 13 February 2005 - where he took the time to break down Pat's original list into decades - saved me a bundle of time in compiling this, by making it easy to skip over the 200+ titles that dated from the '50s & '60s, which I have little interest in. (Anyone here care to tackle the stats from those two decades, now that we've reached the 10-year marker???)

Over the course of researching Todd's modified list of Pat's original, I realized it was necessary to DELETE nine titles from it, while actually ADDING two others (net loss of seven). Specifics below...

The following titles that were in Pat's original list from 05 February 2005 are NOT shown in my list above. This is because it turned out these top 40 hits had indeed been available on at least one U.S. CD at that time, so they shouldn't have been on the list in the first place (Pat just wasn't aware of those CDs back then, due to their rarity):

1973 EDWARD BEAR - "Close Your Eyes" (on one older V/A CD from 1998)
1976 JIMMY DEAN - "I.O.U." (on one older Jimmy Dean CD from 1987)
1976 AL WILSON - "I've Got a Feeling (We'll Be Seeing Each Other Again)" (on one older V/A CD from 1995)
1982 DR. HOOK - "Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk" (on one older Dr. Hook CD from 1983)
1982 STARS ON 45 - "Stars on 45 III" (on one older V/A CD from 1991)
1983 AGNETHA FALTSKOG - "Can't Shake Loose" (on one older Agnetha Faltskog CD from 1983)
1984 BARRY GIBB - "Shine Shine" (on one older Barry Gibb CD from 1984)
1986 ANDY TAYLOR - "Take it Easy" (on one older O.S.T. CD from 1986)

I should also note that I did bend the rules slightly for four others which I did keep on the list, as their initial CD appearances did occur prior to 2005, but I felt they were close enough: Joey Heatherton (2004), Sam Neely (2002), Beach Boys (2003), and David Lasley (2001)...

In addition, since February 2005, it appears Pat has changed his mind w/ regards to the following song qualifying as a top 40 hit, as it no longer appears in the database at all (so it's gone from my list above as well):

1970 FRIJID PINK - "Sing a Song for Freedom" (#39 Cash Box, #41 Record World, #55 Billboard)

However, the following two did NOT appear in Pat's original list from 05 February 2005, but are now shown in my list above, as it has since been decided by folks here on this chat board that their CD appearances ten years ago should be disqualified:

1975 JOHN FOGERTY - "Rockin' All Over the World" (lone CD appearance was on an import that Pat had listed by mistake; only other CD appearance is a live version)
1980 JIMMY RUFFIN - "Hold On to My Love" (lone CD appearance was deemed too short; other two CD appearances are re-recordings)

Not to open up a can of worms, but it's worth noting that the appearance of the Beach Boys' 1981 hit, "The Beach Boys Medley", was on a CD single. I only point this out because Pat has been inconsistent when it comes to entering situations like this into the database, where a top 40 hit's only U.S. CD appearance is on a single. At this time, I can think of four examples: The aforementioned "Beach Boys Medley" (1981), "Voices That Care" by Voices That Care (1991), "Long Road" by Pearl Jam (1995), and "Candle in the Wind 1997" by Elton John (1997). (It's possible I may have forgotten one or two others.) I certainly DON'T feel that all CD singles need to be in the database - but how is it that both the Beach Boys and Voices That Care qualify for inclusion, while Pearl Jam and Elton John DON'T??? Speaking for myself, I feel that if a top 40 hit's ONLY U.S. CD appearance is on a single, then that single SHOULD be in the database; if the song becomes available on an album-length CD at a later date, then the single should be dropped, and the new album added in its place. Therefore, at this time, I think the listings for both the Beach Boys and Voices That Care should stand, while Pearl Jam and Elton John should be added (and you'd also have consistency!). Just my two cents on this issue, but I think most other database subscribers would agree - after all, the more info, the better, right??? :-)

Great detailed info. I didn't pull out the calculator like you did, but at 40% or so, I agree that's a significant amount!

But as for the Al Wilson song I'd modify the list you put it on. The one CD appearance is from vinyl (and not cleaned very well), so I'd like to suggest putting it back to the original list and saying something like "Only available from vinyl transfer", just as you had other qualifiers on other songs (re-recording, etc.) to warn the buyer of the issue with the original source.

Well, just to clarify, the criteria for which songs appeared on my list above was based solely on what Pat currently says when you look them up in his on-line database. In other words, type that artist and/or title into his search engine, and you get his "not on CD" symbol, w/ the red circle and line through it. Of course, another approach you can use to highlight those songs is to type dates into the "YEAR RANGE" fields and click on the "N" next to "ON CD", before hitting the "SEARCH" button...

Currently, the song you mentioned - Al Wilson's 1976 hit, "I've Got a Feeling (We'll Be Seeing Each Other Again)" - does NOT yield the "not on CD" symbol when you look it up in Pat's database. Therefore, he considers its lone CD appearance to be legit. And I see that he does, in fact, note in the database that the song is "mastered from vinyl" on that one CD - so I feel he's already done his part to warn us... :-)

The qualifiers that I noted on some of the other songs merely reflect what Pat currently states in the database, which he feels is enough to warrant the "not on CD" symbol when you search for them (from re-recordings to live versions to "digital download only", all of which I agree with - again, my only complaint being his lack of consistency when it comes to songs available only on CD singles). So if - like w/ Al Wilson - you feel that when a song's only CD appearance to date is from a vinyl transfer, that that should be enough to warrant disqualification from counting as being on CD, I suggest taking that up w/ Pat - after all, it's his database. :-) And let's face it, there are MANY additional songs in the database where their only CD appearances are "mastered from vinyl", so again, let's be consistent, and change all of those to "not on CD" as well. Personally, I think that's going a bit too far, but perhaps I'm in the minority on that one...

Edited to add: Just minutes ago, I checked Pat's on-line database again, and I see that in the last few days he's ADDED the CD singles by both Pearl Jam and Elton John to the listings, and thus you no longer get the "not on CD" symbol when you look either of those up - thumbs up! :-)

Alright, so over the last couple of days, I decided to take on that challenge myself. :-) HOWEVER, due to the sheer volume, I chose not to go into as much detail as I did w/ the '70s & '80s. No album titles or release dates this time - just the no. of CDs and the record labels - which means I also made no attempt to weed out the songs that were already on CD as of February 2005, but appeared on the list because Pat wasn't aware of their existence on CD at that time (although I'm sure there are a few examples). Still, it turns out Pat made some additions (18) & deletions (2) of his own over the last ten years from this period, and those are noted after the list...

Here are the stats, and frankly, I was SHOCKED at the numbers, as both decades are almost double what I was expecting: 56 of the 104 (53.8%) top 40 hits from the '50s that were unavailable on U.S. CD ten years ago have since made their debut, along w/ 96 of the 127 (75.6%) top 40 hits from the '60s. Combined, that's 152 out of 231 - or a pretty remarkable 65.8% that have been scratched! It was interesting to see that about 95% of the effort goes to just eight labels, though: Hit Parade, Complete 60s, Abkco (due entirely to their release of the Cameo-Parkway catalog, of course), Reader's Digest, Time-Life, Collectors' Choice, Eric, and Real Gone. Take away all of the CD releases from those eight labels over the last ten years, and the number of songs we could delete drops to only about 15(!) from both decades, combined. But mainly to their credit, we're now down to just 79 songs from the '50s & '60s that are still MIA on U.S. CDs...

So again, in chronological order, as of February 2005, here's the complete list of 231 missing songs dating from the '50s & '60s (including the 18 Pat's added since then, and minus the two he's since deleted), w/ the 152 that have since made their U.S. CD debut shown in bold, complete w/ the no. of CD appearances and the record label(s) that the legit versions were issued on:

The following is the list of songs that Pat has since added to the on-line database, apparently deciding over the last ten years that they were indeed top 40 hits (and thus they're also on my list above):

1955 DeCASTRO SISTERS - "Boom Boom Boomerang"
1955 FERKO STRING BAND - "Alabama Jubilee"
1955 GEORGIE SHAW - "No Arms Can Ever Hold You"
1955 GORDON JENKINS - "Goodnight, Sweet Dreams"
1955 LAURIE SISTERS - "Dixie Danny"
1955 McGUIRE SISTERS - "Rhythm 'n' Blues (Mama's Got the Rhythm - Papa's Got the Blues)"
1955 PATTI PAGE - "Piddily Patter Patter"
1955 PRISCILLA WRIGHT with DON WRIGHT and the SEPTETTE - "The Man in the Raincoat"
1955 SUNNY GALE - "Unsuspecting Hearts"
1956 DREAM WEAVERS - "A Little Love Can Go a Long, Long Way"
1956 EDDIE FISHER - "Without You"
1956 McGUIRE SISTERS - "My Baby's Got Such Lovin' Ways"
1957 JOHNNIE RAY - "You Don't Owe Me a Thing"
1957 JOHNNIE RAY - "Look Homeward Angel"
1957 PERRY COMO - "Ivy Rose"
1957 TECHNIQUES - "Hey, Little Girl"
1960 JUNE VALLI - "Apple Green"
1961 KENNY DINO - "Your Ma Said You Cried in Your Sleep Last Night"

The following is the list of songs that Pat has since deleted from the on-line database, apparently deciding over the last ten years that they WEREN'T top 40 hits (so they're gone from my list above as well):

1956 RICHARD HAYMAN - "Mack the Knife"
1956 LAWRENCE WELK and HIS ORCHESTRA - "Mack the Knife"

One new inconsistency that I discovered along the way, though: The original recording of Johnnie Ray's 1957 hit, "You Don't Owe Me a Thing", appears on two CDs, where it's "missing a whistling overdub" on both - yet that missing overdub is enough to disqualify the song as appearing on CD. According to the database, Senator Bobby's 1967 hit, "Wild Thing", has appeared on one CD to date, where it's "missing a kazoo overdub" - however, that missing overdub apparently ISN'T enough to disqualify the song as appearing on CD. My two cents: Disqualify Senator Bobby, just like Johnnie Ray - but again, I'm just looking for consistency, more than anything. (Or maybe Pat just hates kazoos, so he can live w/o it??? ;-)) Thoughts, anyone??? (Actually, after just reading the thread devoted to "Wild Thing" here on this chat board, I believe that Pat needs to add some more details to the database regarding this one - after sorting out the mono vs. stereo LP versions, etc., to be fair, it appears that the lone CD version that's missing the overdub may qualify after all...)

Also, Kenny Dino's 1961 hit, "Your Ma Said You Cried in Your Sleep Last Night", currently appears on only one CD, where Pat merely states, "this is not the 45 version" - but that incomplete info is enough to disqualify it as counting on CD. I don't disagree w/ that analysis at this time, but point being, it would appear that w/ further investigation, this song could potentially see its status changed for its lone CD appearance. (Could it be a second 45 version that's on that CD??? An LP version??? Anyone???)

"Give Ireland Back To The Irish" has been released as a bonus track on the new Wings' Wild Life CD reissue. It may have been on a UK reissue a couple of decades ago but finally appears on a US release. McCartney never included the song on any hits compilations despite hitting #21 in the US in 1972.

80smusicfreak,

Now that it is 2019, I would be quite interested to see what top 40 hits still have not made it to CD at all. From 1955-2019.

To be entirely accurate, Coming Up (Live At Glasgow) made it to CD timing in at 3:28, but it's a version that NEVER was released as a promo and never existed. So if Hold On To My Love has an incorrect shortened version that does not match the 45 and its sole appearance should be disqualified, shouldn't Coming Up be held to the same standard since it runs 3:48? It has never made it to CD in its correct 45 version so it should be on the list.

I can say that in the 2010's thanks to the NOW series in the UK and US a lot of top 40 songs have appeared on CD. However with the digital download not everyone has appeared on a CD here in the US.

I can say that the 2012 Somebody I Used To Know Mike D Remix that was played constantly is not on any US CD (or even any import I know). The 2011 S & M remix with Britney Spears only appeared on the CD single. It, along with the other Til The World Ends remix remain only on CD singles and have never gotten commercial release on a US album. It was not even on Britney's essential a few years back.

What complicates expanding the list to the 2010's further is the disappearance of the CD single and the emergence of digital download. The other thread with the ITUNES only downloads should be incorporated into one huge list of songs not available on CD from 2005 to the present.

Just this year numerous top 10 hits have no CD release (Old Town Road, Without Me etc) but do have a digital download available. Let's face it, many hits (Girls Like You with Cardi B, not the album version) are digital downloads now and not on CD.

So lets see what is remaining...

Isn't the version on CD of Jimmy Ruffin's "Hold On to My Love" the dj edit? If that's correct - when the only version on CD is the dj edit, how does Pat define this situation? Is it listed regularly but with the listing saying "dj edit" in its description? If that CD version was never on a 45 (stock or dj) in 1980, I agree that it should be disqualified for the list.

The CD with "Hold On To My Love" is :05 shorter than the promo 45 length. The CD is 3:03 and promo 45 is 3:08.

Aaron, I don't recall where the line is drawn. If it's 5 seconds shorter than a dj edit or a single version, is it excluded as being that version? If it's within, say, fading 3 seconds early, it's included as that "version"? I know this conversation came up before. But I just can't recall what the decided parameters were.

I'm not sure, either. Pat would have to weigh in on that.

Usually I make the comment that a cd appearance is :xx shorter than the commercial or dj 45 and if it is only a few seconds shorter then I do not make any comment. So to answer your question completely there is no hard and set time limit that has to be attained before I make that comment. I assume now that most 45 running times have been entered in the database and you can reach your own conclusion based on that information.

The past few weeks, I've been buying some old CDs with hard-to-find-on-CD mixes. According to this thread:

http://www.top40musiconcd.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2929 - http://www.top40musiconcd.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2929

If a 'single version' is not included on a U.S. commercial CD album / compilation, then said 'single version' is considered to be 'not available on CD' (i.e. Candle In The Wind 97), correct? The list given on the above thread does not include any of the Milli Vanilli singles: only "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" has been released commercially on a U.S. commercial CD album (and only on the album's fourth pressing); the other five singles have not appeared on CD format.

Per that thread, commercial CD singles do not count, only U.S. commercial CD albums / compilations do. What about EPs?   "The Beach Boys Medley" was released on a U.S. commercial CD EP:

https://www.discogs.com/The-Beach-Boys-Sounds-Of-Summer-Singles/release/5609636 - https://www.discogs.com/The-Beach-Boys-Sounds-Of-Summer-Sing les/release/5609636

It's a U.S. commercial CD EP compilation, it's not a CD single.

I would change the Stevie Wonder medley to:

Stars On - Stars On 45 III: A Tribute To Stevie Wonder (1982)

I think Pat counts EPs the same way he counts singles and does not include them. Also, as we all know, "not available on CD" has a caveat. It means for purposes of the database, the song has never appeared on a full-length US CD. These are rules, though, that go back to Pat's original vision when he was first publishing books. Certainly there are imports, singles, and EPs that contain US top 40 hits that are simply not eligible for the database based on his current rules.

Oh, also, further clarification, the "not available on CD" has nothing to do with any particular version. It's only if the song doesn't appear on any US full-length CDs in any originally released version. So, Milli Vanilli is available on CD, but they may only be LP versions. For songs that are only available as later re-recorded versions, Pat still indicates those as "not available."

To me, this all appears to be somewhat contradictory, and extremely confusing. Again, to me. That being said the database doesn't seem to follow its own rules, since "Voices That Care" is 'available on CD', while "Candle In The Wind '97" is 'not available on CD'. Both songs are only available on their respective singles only.

My suggestion, for the forum, is that we should be uniform across the board. Instead of listing things under 'The 1960s - 125 titles have not yet appeared on CD', they should be listed under 'The 1960s - 125 titles have not yet appeared on a U.S. commercial CD album/compilation'. Otherwise, it's rather confusing.

IMHO: In the U.S. EPs have always been considered as albums, not singles (other than for a short period in the 60s?). Singles usually have a very short commercial span - remaining in print for just a couple of months. EPs, on the other hand, remain in print for years - usually for as long as albums do.

These are Pat's rules, subjective as they may be, so I just try to understand them as best as possible. Why does he include the Voices That Care maxi CD single? I honestly have no clue. Perhaps he was considering adding some singles in rare cases but changed his mind and forgot to remove it.

IMHO, I wish the database included singles, EPs, and imports, and it would be nice if it included time-tested "hits" that missed the top 40. I can understand, though, why Pat would want to keep it limited in scope. It's labor of love for him (aka "unprofitable") that requires a lot of time as it is. Expanding it would potentially mean a ton of additional hours of data entry.

That's why, though, we have the forum to discuss things that are not in the database.

I'm always very careful the way I phrase my posts: The changes I suggest are always for the forum only not the DB. And they are always suggestions, not mandates.

It could be argued that this forum has two types of guests: the ones who live in this community and the ones who come for a visit. I discovered this forum... 10 years ago? while I was hunting down single versions on CD. I'd say that a lot of visitors come to this forum when they are looking for rare single versions available on CD format.

My question are: Is the purpose of the forum the same as the DB?

- If so, my understanding has always been that the purpose was to catalog 'single version' on CD. If that is not the case, is the purpose to merely catalog 'album version's available on CD? That doesn't make sense to me, since most albums contain the 'album version'; it would seem redundant.

- If the purposes of the DB and forum are not the same, does it stand to reason then that forum is to catalog single versions available on CD format? After all, the forum (and its URL) is called Top 40 Music On Compact Disc, and not Album Versions on Compact Disc.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to create a new post and pin it to the top (for newer members to read)? Sort of like the forum's / DB's "mission statement"?

Interesting situation here. For starters, although the vinyl LP & cassette were both issued on Casablanca 7264 in early 1982, by the time the CD version came out in 1983-84, the Casablanca label was no more

PolyGram folded Casablanca Records onto Mercury Records in 1986 (read: closed). I believe Animotion was one of its last releases. If you're referring to Dr. Hook 1984 CD from Germany, Casablanca was really a U.S.-only label, hence why the German CD sports a Mercury label.

Is the correct mix found on the Japanese 1997 reissue of "Rarities", which incidentally includes all three medleys?:

I'd say you're right about that, and it's the same reason I joined.

The forum was originally set up to support the database. Prior to the forum and database, Pat published a book with this information. Over the years through this forum, we've been able to point out hundreds of updates/corrections for the database. That's a big part of what the forum is here to do, but it has also become a way to help others find the versions they are looking for that may be outside the scope of the database (imports, CD singles, making your own edits, etc.). In short, the forum gave us a way to communicate, provide information to each other, ask questions, supply Pat with updates, etc.

While it's accurate to say that most of us here collect single versions (probably more than album versions), the purpose of the database and forum is not exclusively to catalog which CDs have the single versions, but rather it's to catalog which CDs have US top 40 hits and then label which version is contained on each CD.

Again, I'm using "single version" aka "45 version" in general terms, as we normally use it here, which is to indicate the version that appears on the A-side of the 7" or cassette single or the lead track of the 2-track CD single. The "45 version" or "single version" (general terms) may have an officially named version by the record label, which we would typically indicate by capitalizing the first letter. Examples might be Edit, Radio Edit, Single Edit, 7" Edit, Remix/Edit, 7" Version, Single Version, Radio Remix, and so on and so forth. Because there isn't any consistency as to what record labels will call these versions, we keep things simple and less confusing by simply saying "45 version" or "single version." If a CD contains the "single version," we mean it has the same version that appears as the A-side of the single, regardless of what the record label has officially named it.

I'm happy to do that if people think it would be helpful.

Fair point on this, and I agree. The thing to consider, though, is that this particular thread was started in 2005, and it's one of the earliest posts on the entire forum. Pat was directly referencing the database (as it was in 2005), and so yes, it was meaning those songs had yet to appear on a full-length US CD. While there are a handful of these types of threads on the forum, I don't think there are an abundance of them.

Aaron,

One of the main problems in the last few years is that huge hits like Old Town Road dont even appear on CD anymore (the original not the remix with Billy). I had to search to find Lil Nas and his released album digitally, there was no CD distribution of it.

The days of finding a full-length US CD with today's hits outside the NOW series is getting harder and harder. Since I have been assembling 2019's top 40 myself all year, I can tell you that only 20 percent have come from ripping CD's and 80 percent have come from digital download. Unless your Taylor Swift or Post Malone you generally are not releasing CD's anymore. Walmart and Target and Best Buy have no new CD sections anymore leading to the problem.

Walmart and Target here do have a few CDs but not that
many. You need to go on Amazon or importcds.com to find
out if anything current is on CD.

Amazon isn't the best place to determine track
listings. Discogs is solid but someone has to put that
disc in the database. I know many newer smooth jazz
titles, 50's jazz reissues, and cdbaby artists that
are not in the Discogs database. Just released titles
and compilations are not in there for weeks or more.

It's a shame but the lack of sealed cds in a store for
purchase is a byproduct of not enforcing copyright law
back in the late 90's with Napster and file sharing.
The false nostalgia of plastic records (vinyl) has
just ruined collecting for those who already replaced
worn out styrene 45's and unspooled tapes.

Walmart has CDs but they are more focused on Blu Rays and 4Ks. Target near me does not even have CDs anymore.

As for Best Buy, most dont carry new CD's. FYE is the only place I know that will have the new CD releases here...

There still are new releases from time to time that have Target Exclusive CD versions with extra tracks. I would think every Target would have those available for a short period of time (even in small quantities).

Every time I come into my Target store their CD section is non-existent. I asked the store manager and he said it was a decision to eliminate CD's entirely since they were not selling...

What city are you in again? In L.A., all the Targets I've been in have a CD section; one near me is fairly decent size-wise, all things being relative.

Walmarts around here have a handful of CDs, mostly
compilations like NOW, etc., an OK selection of DVDs,
about 50/50 between movies and tv show season sets, and a
LOT of video games. Don't know about blueray or
4K...don't have a player for either so they're not
something I'd browse.
Nearest Target or Best Buy is a 2 hour drive away, have
no idea where there'd be a Fye.

FYE is nice but it can't last too much longer. It diversified into all sorts of stuff to sell that includes cds and dvd/blu rays but I go there for very few discs anymore. Honest truth is that Discogs/Amazon/Ebay have more choices and more available that most of us here seek.
