Bringing this thread back from the dead 12 years later because I was in a store that was playing WCBS-FM/101.1 NY the other day and "Glory Days" was on. I could swear I heard a cold ending, no fade, right up to a Springsteen "whoop" at the very end before a station liner kicked in. I'm pretty sure it wasn't merely the radio compression counteracting the fade out. But again, my listening situation wasn't perfect. So, since 2014, has this (possibly Video) version been released on CD or digital? |

I've heard it that way on my local CBS classic hits station, so it's probably in their central library. I'm not aware that it has been officially released, but again, it's not difficult to "undo" the fade using audio editing software.

The version with the cold ending was released by TM Century on GoldDisc 903N, track 11 (4.17), but I understand it was never released on commercial CD. I hope this information is helpful. |

My TM copy is faded at the end from 3:55 to 4:11, just like the CD version from Born In The U.S.A.. I'm not sure which GoldDisc this is from, though.

I'm pretty sure it was. A typical radio station AGC has at least 20 dB of gain range to bring up the quiet parts of a song. Add compression on top of that, and fade-outs don't become apparent until they get near the threshold of silence. When I heard "Glory Days" on the radio, I never hear a fade-out until the laughter at the very end. |

I think both of you may be right. The CD version has the laughter at 4:07 where the audio has dropped to about -18dB. It's definitely into the fade by this point, but the volume is still very audible. This can technically be considered a "cold" ending, even though there's more audio that follows. By 4:08, the volume starts dropping drastically. At 4:10, there's a "wooo" and drum roll. The final note hits at 4:12 and -30dB, which is where the song truly ends cold. This is the cold ending I've heard on my local CBS classic hits station, and when I've heard it there's not even a hint that the song has started to fade out. I'm pretty certain it would require someone boosting the ending volume purposefully to be heard loud and clear on the air. |

Here is "Glory Days", as played from a 320 kbps MP3 rip of the "Born in the USA" CD album, through my CRL Amigo AM broadcast audio processor and C-Quam AM Stereo transmitter, and received on a Denon TU-680NAB tuner. This is actual over-the-air reception, hence the little bit of crackle at the very end:
GloryDaysAMStereo.wav Even with the CRL processor set to its factory-recommended settings, which are fairly moderate compared to what major-market stations are using today, the audio level remains consistent until the "Let's go!" shout and laughter, and then quickly drops off, although the "woo" and drum roll are still definitely audible. Here is an in-depth video I made about the CRL Amigo AM processor, if you want to learn more about how broadcast audio processing works: Audio processing: Why music sounds different on the radio |

Funny. Earlier today after reading through this thread I was actually planning to return home from work and post a reply about how the right amount of processing makes some slow fadeouts seem non-existent and I was going to reference and link the VWestlife Amigo video.
Lo and behold, it's right there direct from the source. |

Both the classic hits stations in NYC and Dallas are owned by Audacy. So, Aaron would be correct in saying the full volume song to the end might be in the company's central music library.
Would the full volume version be considered a Video Mix? |

Yes, this is exactly what I'd expect the CD version to sound like through on-air processing without any "help" at the end. Here's what the ending sounds like when I've heard it locally: Glory Days (cold ending). |
