my commercial 45 issued as A&M 1938-s states on the label a run time of 4:07 but it actually runs 3:20....the run out groove has "am 12256-s comm t4" etched in it......this running time differs from the two run times claimed in the db (dj-3:32, commercial-4:07).....is it possible that there are 2 different commercial 45 versions??.....does anyone have this commercial 45 to verify it's run time, stated time and etching??....the song on my 45 sounds slightly different than the one from the retrospectacle cd.....anyone???

Ed:
Glad to have you back on the board, buddy! You say your "Give a Little Bit" commercial 45 has a slightly different sound than what has appeared on CD. Does your 45 sound like it could be a remix? Or is it maybe just EQ-ed differently than the CD appearances? I was wondering if you could elaborate a little bit more on the differences you're hearing. |

Ed, my commercial 45 has a listed time of (4:07), and an actual time of (4:06). Deadwax is "AM12256-S P2 COMM". My promo 45 has this same listed (4:07), actual (4:06) length on one side, but instead of "Edited Version", which I've seen on dozens of other 70's A&M promo 45 short versions, this promo short version says "Special DJ Version", with a listed time of (3:32), but an actual time of (3:30). As I recall, A&M would on occasion issue a "Broadcast EQ'D" promo 45, trying to have it sound hotter on the radio, as Todd hinted. Deadwax for this promo short v is "AM 12256-S DJ S3". This appears to be a unique mix to either of your (3:20) versions, Ed. I currently have no (3:20) version, either on a commercial or promo 45, so this situation is becoming more complicated, not less so.

All I know is that I need a dub (vinyl or CD) of the version that was THE HIT RADIO VERSION which I can't find anywhere.
Most notable, other than the 2 edits, was a lack of reverb on Roger Hodgson's lead vocal. It was a much better mix. Anyone have that version? Andy |

Due to both Ed and Andy's inquiries, I just revisited this song. Within about an hour yesterday, I had answered questions about songs from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, and was getting a little punchy. As a result, I gave a wrong timing. My promo 45 has an actual time of (3:32), but an actual time of (3:20), not (3:30) as I had previously reported. I apologize for this. I have shot out both my stock and promo 45s to Ed, for his further analysis.

Hi people,
Jim shot me out a dub of his promo 45 and it IS the version I remember hearing on the radio with the superior mix and it has 3 edits, not 2 as I previously, inaccurately stated. Andy |

i just picked up the commercial 45 from my local used record store here on long island (mr. cheapo's), highly recomended, i might add, and it indeed is identical to the full 4:07 cd version.....the run out groove matches the one on jim's 45 as well.....this puts another 45 single version to bed.....jim....thanks for your help on this one......
