pat

i'm reviewing warrant's top 40 songs and the entry for "cherry pie" might need revision..........the cassingle version and the version from "best of" cd are identical..........you have the qualifier as "lp version"...........what do you hear as the differences???

Ed:

I believe it was me who alleged a single and album version distinction for "Cherry Pie". I don't have access to my CD library at the moment (I'm out of town for the weekend), but I do have the promo CD single and, if I recall correctly from memory, the track listing is shown as "Single version" on Track 1 and "LP version" on Track 2. I guess I just assumed the "Single version" was the one that appeared on the cassingle. I don't recall if there was a vinyl 45 commercially released for this song? Does anyone have it and, if so, does it differ from the LP/cassingle version? There have been some cases during the early '90s where a song's commercial vinyl and cassette single differ from one another.

I just timed both the cassingle and vinyl 45 for "Cherry Pie" and they both run 3:21, just like the LP version. The 3:11 shown in the Pop Annual appears to be just a typo.

Ah... Thanks, Paul. The 3:11 listing in Pop Annual is partly what threw me off. I just listened to my "Cherry Pie" promo DJ CD single (Columbia CSK 73510) and the track listing and actual run times are as follows:

1) SINGLE VERSION - 3:09
2) DIRTY ROTTEN FILTHY STINKING RICH MIX (ALBUM VERSION) - 3:19

As far as I can tell, the only difference between the two tracks is the first :10 of Track 2 (the LP version) fades in with swirling screaming sounds followed by a chant of "dirty rotten filthy stinking rich", which slightly overlaps the song's guitar intro. Track 1 (which claims to be the "single version" but is really a DJ edit only) begins right at the start of the guitar intro.

For the purposes of the database, Pat, you might want to remove all LP version comments since it's been documented here that the LP and commercial single versions are identical, and also make a note of the DJ CD single run times.

Pat:

I just viewed your updated information regarding "Cherry Pie" in the database (wow, you responded very quickly!). To be fully complete, you might want to mention that the DJ CD single runs (3:09) and (3:19).

I just noticed that the 3:09 'single version' or 'dj
edit' is on Rhapsody and iTunes on a various artists
collection called 15 Metal Songs on the Legacy
Recordings label.

Not sure if this is a digital download only or is on a
physical CD. The release date is listed as March 22,
2011.

There's a left/right channel reversal somewhere, so I have a question for Todd:

There's a guitar break starting at 0:18 on the promo CD single version and 0:28 on the album version. Can you report back if it's in the left channel or the right channel for each version on the promo CD single?

I have the album version on Madacy's Rock On 1990, and it's in the left channel.

I have the promo CD single version on TuneUp Next40 #28, and it's in the right channel.

FWIW, the guitar break is in the left channel on the 15
Metal Songs collection I described above.

Since Todd Ireland hasn't been on the forum in a long
time, as well as abagon and several others (where did
they go??), does anyone else have a copy of the promo CD
single to answer Ron's question above?

I have the promo CD single, and the guitar break on the Single Version at 0:18 is in the left channel. It appears, Ron, your TuneUp CD has the channels reversed.

Also, the Single Version has a clean opening guitar note, so it cannot be replicated by cutting off the intro to the LP version.

I noticed today on Qobuz that an Expanded Edition of the
album Cherry Pie is available, featuring the single version
or DJ edit as a bonus track.
