Just noticed that my mono 45 of The Fleetwoods "Lovers By Night, Strangers By Day" is different than the version found on the Rhino cd "The Best Of The Fleetwoods".

The difference is found at the 1:30 mark where the 45 has the refrain "So 'til I tell her, it's all over, stay with me, let's still be..." followed by the chorus. The cd version, however, omits the refrain at this point and goes right to the chorus.

Also of note, the listed time on my Dolton 45 is 2:10 while the run time is 2:16.

I just checked each cd that includes this song and they all do not include the true 45 version of "Lovers By Night" as you describe Jon so the question is where did the version on these cd's come from? Was there a vinyl LP that included this song?

According to my research, "Lovers by Night, Strangers by Day" appeared on the vinyl LP The Fleetwoods Sing for Lovers by Night released on the Dolton label in 1962.

The 45 can be created by taking the first refrain "So 'til I tell her, it's all over, stay with me, let's still be..." at the downbeat at about :58.7, Copy it all the way to the end and then paste it where it reappears on the 45 at about 1:29.45. Then after you've done that, edit out the entire chorus from 1:37.12 - 2:00.17 and you should have a perfect true 45 edit, gadawful edit and all. the 45. Fade til "...strangers by day." at 2:15.4. These edit points might not be exact, since I'm also seeing a speed difference of -1.15%, slowing even further to about -1.40 at the end. After the speeds has been corrected, the actual 45 times out to 2:17.

FWIW, I suspect that when they reissued the CDs, they took a listen to that edit and decided to get rid off it and then add another chorus (the one we edited out) to bring it up to "time." Just a guess, there, but it makes sense.

Thank you, Robert, for adding your findings and edits to this discussion. I wanted to add that the edit on the 45 at that 1:29.45 mark sounds like it wasn't done with professional precision. Also, for what it's worth, I agree with your timing of 2:17. I think when I originally did my timing on this song I got 2:16.5 and rounded down.
