Well, there were two single/promo versions, so....
(a) The 12" edited down to about 3:45 will give the remixed promo version (I've done it to replace my worn 45-rpm disc!). In Canada, in early 1982, this was the version I came across the most in stores.
(b) Then the LP edit will provide what I heard across the border on most American stations. It's also the same edit found on "Rock n' Soul, Part I".
I tried once making an edit from the 12" to match the LP edit length. I like the LP edit better, but I like the remix sound on the 12". The final edit is impossible though because the keyboard voices roll off ten seconds before the splice. Crap!

Of course, the remix/edit has been issued on CD in the US since Ed made that post, on the Hall & Oates "Playlist" CD.

Those Playlist CDs are really issuing a lot of single versions that have remained unavailable on CD format for years, maybe decades.
Beware though... Donna's death's first cash-in has been issued by Epic/Legacy. They have released a Playlist for her. But sadly it's just a re-release of her VH1 Live album minus the studio cuts and plus 4 live songs
that were only released on the original DVD but not the original CD. Epic/Legacy is clearly hoping that people will not notice that all songs are live recordings.

Here's something interesting I noticed today. I always thought the 3:39 single edit was of the LP version. As it turns out, this is a unique mix but very similar to the LP version. The difference is in the delay on the lead vocal. On the 45 edit, the vocal in the left and right channels are not delayed with each other, but the right channel only has an added delay effect. That means if you listen to only the left channel, the vocal sounds dry. If you listen to only the right channel, you hear a double-tracking effect.
On the LP version, the vocal in the left and right channel are delayed by about 15/1000s of a second, and the left channel always starts sooner, making it sound like Daryl is singing from left to right. If you listen to each channel by itself, however, the vocal sounds completely dry in both channels.
All that to say, you can't actually edit the LP version to create the 3:39 edit. In my library, the best sounding copy is on Rock 'N Soul Part 1, but most other discs that aren't brickwalled also sound just fine. There is an outlier, however, on the Billboard Hot R&B Hits 1982 disc. This disc sounds like a high generation tape with exaggerated high end. My promo 45 sounds pretty much identical, sonically, to what's on Rock 'N Soul.

I was wondering if anyone knew if stations flipped the
promo 45 over and played the club mix edit in place of the
45 version or in addition to playing the 45 version?

Yes, quite a few Top-40 stations played
the Robert Wright remix/edit.
Not necessarily because they wanted a
dancier version on the air, but because
Daryl's lead vocal cut through in mono on
the remix MUCH better than the digitally-
delayed 45 or LP version.
When this song was a hit, a lot of
powerful AM stations were broadcasting
monaurally, and of course many FM portable
radios were mono.
Mono compatibility mattered.

I don't remember ever hearing the single remix before tonight. It's very interesting! Seems like it might not only be a different mix, but at least occasionally a different take on a few lines? Perhaps not; I haven't A-B'd it.
This video is playing all 80s 7" singles, and you can hear the remix in the link below. I almost fell out of my chair when it started up! I thought I'd been playing the wrong version on my station. (I am, however, going to double-check and make sure we're playing the single edit / mix vs. the album edit.)

The single remix (or club mix, as it's labeled on the
promo 45) is actually the version I remember hearing on
the radio in the 80s. I don't think it has any different
vocal takes, but it does use different ad-libs from LP
version than the LP edit does.
