I was able to recreate the 45 using the 12" version. Don't remember the edit points offhand, though. |

Diggin' up an old thread if you don't mind...
For clarification, am I to presume on my DJ 45 (RCA JB-12361) that the 'Club Mix', remixed by Robert Wright that runs 3:50, is the 'hit' version?
Honestly, I don't remember playing this version on the radio in 1981.

Yes, that would be correct. Although I don't remember what was played on the radio in '81, this is definitely the version on the stock 45. Given that it has never surfaced on CD (other than the long extended club mix), every radio station I hear it on plays the version on the other side of that DJ 45.

Pat, somehow your comment in the database for this got truncated, and omits the description of the (3:50) DJ 45 version, which was the (Club Mix).

I thought I'd follow up on Jim's last post to let you know the database comment for Daryl Hall & John Oates' "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" is still truncated and currently reads as follows:
(dj copies of this 45 run (3:41) and (3:50), the )
The comment should state that the 3:50 version is the "Club Mix".

Is there a quick way to tell if someone has the 45 version vs. the DJ edit? What are the differences?

Until seven years ago, I ran a web page about the U.S. popular music in Japanese.
Then I introduced " I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" 45 version that is the track on the Rhino CD "Billboard Hot R&B Hits 1982".
Because I only owned the commercial copy of "the actual running time (3:42) the listed time "3:39"".
One day, a Japanese friend reported "My U.S. commercial copy is not its version" to me.
It was incredible for me. I inquired about the commercial 45 of the listed time "3:50" to some U.S. online stores, and got it soon.
I'm convinced of "two 45 versions exist". But... I don't know about the hit version.
As a reference, see the following scanning images, please.

Though I have heard the "Club Mix" on the radio before, the DJ 45 flip-side containing the edit of the LP version running 3:41 is what I recall hearing on my local stations the majority of the time. And now that Abagon has furnished proof that this 3:41 edit has been issued as one of two commercial 45 pressings, all database comments for "I Can't Go for That" will once again need to be revised to reflect this new information because there are technically two hit versions.

You can tell in the first five seconds--the remix has a couple of extra percussion hits at (:03), and a long-held keyboard note over the drums at around (:05). The LP edit does not have either.

That's wild!
I didn't recall two different 45 releases on that one.
The one I have is the 3:50 version.
I recall being disappointed when I bought the top R&B of 1982 disc and it had the 3:39 version.
So in fact the 3:39 version is the 45 version, but the 3:50 mix is also the 45 version.

The thing is, only the 3:39 version is what appears on CD and on the radio these days.
I had a lucky find 2 years ago when I found a near mint promo 45 in a local corner record store...and it had both versions on it.

The remixed 45 version actually runs 3:54, not 3:50.

Sorry, I took a mistake. The remix 45 version surely runs 3:54. Another 45 has (3:42) of the running time, truly.

The database currently shows the following general comment for Daryl Hall & John Oates' "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)":
commercial copies of this 45 were issued in two different pressings, one with a stated time of (3:39) and one with a running time of (3:54) not (3:50) as stated on the record label and does not carry the notation "club mix" like the dj copies do)
As Abagon pointed out previously on this thread, the commercial 45 pressings with the 3:39 stated time have an actual run time of 3:42.
There are currently a number of CD entries in the database containing the 3:42 45 version, but for some reason none of them show a comment stating this. In my opinion, it would make sense for these particular entries to include a comment like:
(this is one of the 45 versions which is an edit of the LP version)
