As promised in a previous thread, I now submit for your viewing pleasure a list of promo CDs from my personal collection containing radio edits that aren't yet included in Top 40 Music on Compact Disc. I will list artist and song title, the tracks on each CD, the actual run times (which I'm sure you all know is sometimes quite different from the corresponding printed run times), and the catalog number for reference purposes. As a rule of thumb, I'll make a note whenever the actual run time differs from its printed run time by four seconds or more. I'll also throw in my own personal comments as I see fit. If anyone has any comments, corrections, or additions of their own, please feel free to chime in. Due to the fact that I'm currently juggling a busy schedule, I only have time to list a handful of promo CDs right now. However, I plan to gradually add more over time. I hope you'll find this information useful. And now, without further ado!...

Comments: The R&B remix is the same remix that appears on Paula's Greatest Hits CD (Virgin 48980). I'm having a hard time deciding if this remix should count as an official Top 40 "DJ edit". Of course, the final decision is up to Pat!

Comments: Two different promo CDs were issued for this song. The disc with the CHR Mix seems to be the more difficult of the two to find. It's also the version I remember hearing most on local Top 40 radio.
My conclusion: Some DJ copies of this single run (4:14) and (5:07), while others run (4:02); commercial copies were all (5:07)
AEROSMITH - AMAZING (Geffen PRO-CD-4565)

Comments: I can recall some radio stations playing the orchestral version as the song was falling off the charts. The same was true for the follow-up single "Crazy" (see entry below). Whether or not to acknowledge these orchestral versions in the book is, I suppose, debatable.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single contain edits that run (4:11) and (5:55) in addition to orchestral mixes which also run (4:11) and (5:55); commercial copies were all (5:55)

AEROSMITH - FALLING IN LOVE (IS HARD ON THE KNEES) (Columbia CSK 9412)

3) Album Version (3:24)
Comments: All three mixes on this promo CD sound so similar to one another that one must listen hard to detect distinguishing characteristics. The fact that the run times are nearly identical creates a bit of a headache when trying to form a concluding comment about these radio edits.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single feature a "Top 40" mix, a "Rock Radio" mix, and the commercial version, which runs (3:20), (3:25), and (3:24), respectively

Comments: I think most would agree that it'd be a mess trying to list all seven of these remixes as “DJ edits” in the book, especially considering that this song never garnered enough airplay to warrant recognition for seven different mixes. (I’m not even sure why any radio station would see a need to program the “instrumental” version on their playlist.) Therefore, I’m going to focus on the two versions that would most likely interest Top 40 radio programmers – the “radio mix” and the “single version”. Now what's interesting here is the commercial vinyl 45 and cassette single releases both feature the radio mix and do not contain the so-called single version. I'm guessing that the single version was originally intended to be the 45 version, but for whatever reason the execs at Solar later decided to promote the extended radio mix as the official commercial 45 single instead. Thus, to sum up the paradox here, the 5:07 "radio mix" is actually the 45 version, while the 4:08 "single version" is an edit of the radio mix. Incidentally, the LP version runs 4:38 and is not included on this promo CD.

Comments: I have a "rapless" radio edit of this song that runs 3:59 and appears on a mainstream radio CD subscription series made exclusively for DJs, called Promo Only. I have yet to see this version on an actual promotional CD release, but it received a lot of airplay where I live. If anyone can verify whether or not this edit appears on its own promo disc, please feel free to post your comments.

Comments: I've now pretty much determined as a rule of thumb that I won't count remixes as DJ edits unless they are explicitly aimed at a specific radio format (such as a "Rock" or "AOR" remix, an "R&B" mix, an "AC" or "Hot AC" mix, etc.) or if I feel a particular remix received significant enough airplay to help propel the song up the charts. The Slow Sensual Mix in this case does not fall into any of the aforementioned categories.
My conclusion: DJ copies of this single run (4:16) and (4:56); commercial copies were all (4:56)
MEREDITH BROOKS - BITCH (Capitol DPRO-12014)
1) Edit - 3:58
Comments: The radio edit fades out :13 sooner than the 45 and LP version. This edit does appear on the various artist compilation Absolutely The Best of the 90's (Fuel 2000 302061348), but the comment currently listed in the book beside that CD title is: (faded :14 earlier than the 45 or LP). It would be more accurate for the comment to read: (radio edit).

Greetings once again, Top 40 music collectors! My apologies for the lengthy absence since my last posting as I've been quite busy with work and travel among other things. I dug deeper through my CD collection recently and found a few promo discs that should've been included within my previous posts. I'll list these first and then will resume alphabetically from where I last left off.
AEROSMITH - LOVE IN AN ELEVATOR (Geffen PRO-CD-3645)
1) CHR Edit with Intro - 3:37

Comments: The LP version, as presented on this disc, includes the introduction, whereas the actual LP version does not. Each of the three edits are taken from the LP version and are not remixes.

BAD ENGLISH - POSSESSION (Epic ESK 73398)

Comments: I don't have a copy of the commercial single, but according to Joel Whitburn in Pop Annual, the run time of the 45 version is 4:47. Since Pat does make note of the LP Version in the 10th edition of his book, I'm wondering if he or anyone else has a commercial single copy and can verify its actual run time? For the time being, I'll just assume that the 45 version and radio edit are different.

JON BON JOVI - BLAZE OF GLORY (Mercury CDP 279)

Comments: The comment "LP version" is listed next to each CD appearance of this song in the 10th edition. However, Joel Whitburn lists the 45 run time in Pop Annual at 5:30, which is the approximate length of the LP version. I e-mailed Pat directly about this and he's looking into the actual run time of the 45 (I don't have a commercial single copy for reference). If it turns out the commercial single does run 5:30, then the 4:22 version on this promo CD would be a radio edit and thus the "LP version" comment in the book would probably need to be removed since the 45 version and the LP version are the same. If anyone has a commercial single copy of "Blaze of Glory", please feel free to post your observations.
My conclusion (if Whitburn proves to be correct): DJ copies of this single run (4:22), not (4:18) as stated on the label, and (5:33), not (5:38) as stated on the label; commercial copies were all (5:30?)

Comments: Same situation as "Blaze of Glory" above. The comment "LP version" is listed next to the lone CD appearance of this song in the 10th edition, but Joel Whitburn lists the 45 run time at 5:00, which is close to the length of the LP version. Pat is also looking into the actual 45 run time here. If it turns out the commercial single does run around 5:00, then the 4:33 version on this promo CD would be a radio edit and therefore the "LP version" comment in the book would probably need to be removed since the 45 version and the LP version are the same. Once again, if anyone has "Miracle" on a commercial single format, your observations are most welcome.

I'll hold off on making a definitive conclusion until I can fill in these gaps of missing info. As always, any and all input is welcome!

Comments: This promo CD is an odd duck. The label states that there are two tracks on this disc: 1) EDIT VERSION - 4:58, and 2)ALBUM VERSION - 5:56. In actuality, there is only one track on this CD and it runs 5:21. After conferring with forum member edtop40, who has this promo CD as well as the commercial single release, he informed me that the 45 version also runs 5:21 and is the exact same version that appears on the promo disc. He further noted that the commercial 45 label misstates the run time at 4:58. Thanks, edtop40!

All three edits are taken directly from the LP and 45 version. The regular 3:49 Radio Edit was the version I most commonly heard on radio, though I believe all three received airplay.

Comments: A different promo CD of this song (Arista 12951-2) was serviced to some radio stations and features only the Gass and Morales mixes, so it seems that the record label made a concerted effort to get these remixes some airplay. I recall hearing the Morales mix occasionally on my local Top 40 stations, but not the Gass mix. Granted, my listening experience is purely anecdotal (which by the way should always be kept in mind when reading my commentary) and does not indicate airplay trends for the entire country. This is a tough call, but I suppose a case can be made to count these particular mixes as radio edits. Incidentally, the Morales Mix appears on Deborah Cox's self-titled CD (Arista 18781-2), but is not listed in the 10th edition.
My conclusion: Some DJ copies of this single run (3:58), (4:24), and (4:45); commercial copies were all (4:21)

From here on out, I've decided that whenever I post info on a promo CD containing remixes I don't consider to be official Top 40 radio edits, I will state my conclusion in the following manner: "DJ copies of this single contains an edit [or edits] that runs (X:XX)", instead of: "DJ copies of this single run (X:XX). I just think this slight difference in wording is more accurate and encompassing in that the statement implies that other content exists on the promo disc besides the radio edits.
DESTINY'S CHILD - BILLS, BILLS, BILLS (Columbia CSK 40443)

Comments: As usual, I do not consider an instrumental version of a hit as a radio edit.

Comments: Since the AOR Mix is aimed at a specific radio format (Album Oriented Rock), this falls under my criteria to count this as an official radio edit. The LP version runs 3:59, but is not noted as such in the 10th editon.

Comments: The radio edit was the version I always heard on mainstream Top 40 stations. I 'm not certain but I believe the Remix and the Sunshine Reggae Mix were programmed on some of the more rhythmic/dance-oriented Top 40 playlists. I'm torn in this case as to whether or not to acknowledge these remixes as official radio edits though because I don't know how much of an overall impact they had on the song's success nationally. I'm tilted toward focusing on what mainstream Top 40 radio played, so I'll state the radio edit run time only in my conclusion. I'll leave it to Pat to be the official judge. Also, this song was never released on a commercial single format, so there really is no 45 version. The LP version runs 4:35.

The actual LP version run time should read 4:55. Therefore, my revised conclusion now reads: DJ copies of this single run (4:24) and (4:55); commercial copies were all (4:55)

I have a couple of additional corrections I'd like to note before posting the next installment of DJ edits. Commercial single copies of Depeche Mode's "It's No Good" all run (5:57), not (5:27) as previously stated. Also, the correct title of Nelly Furtado's aforementioned single is "Turn off the Light", not "Turn out the Light". Sorry, sometimes my brain and fingers fail to sync up properly... especially when I'm typing late at night. :-)

First off, I'd like to thank Pat Downey for his recent input regarding my DJ edit postings. He was also kind enough to inform me that he recently obtained vinyl commercial 45s of Jon Bon Jovi's "Blaze Of glory" and "Miracle". For "Blaze", Pat says the vinyl 45 both states and actually runs (5:38), but notes that there is an opening sound effect on the 45 that is longer than the Blaze Of Glory soundtrack CD version, which runs (5:33). He further explains that the cd version has a :12 hidden introduction that isn't found on the 45. But due to the longer sound effect, Pat says he will continue to list the current entries of all CDs containing the (5:33) version of this song as "(LP version)", but will change those listings that run (5:38) in his book to "(45 version)" since the (5:38) entries contain the longer sound effect found on the vinyl 45.
As for "Miracle", Pat informs me that the commercial vinyl 45 states a (5:08) run time, but really clocks in at (5:06). Nevertheless, it's identical to the version found on the Blaze Of Glory soundtrack CD, so he will remove the comment "(LP version)" on that listing for the 11th edition.

Curiously, the first track on this promo CD is listed as the "Single Version" and actually does clock in at 3:58 (the intro is edited compared to that of the LP Version and fades out :04 sooner). It may simply be that EMI originally planned to release the 3:58 version on commercial cassette and vinyl single formats but for whatever reason the 4:12 version was pressed instead and it was too late to change the printed run time on the label. As a result, the 3:58 edit wound up being serviced exclusively to radio stations. I suppose there's also a possibility that there might've been two pressings of this single, each with different run times. But until such evidence surfaces, I'll accept Pat's notations as accurate and the "Single Version" as it appears on this promo disc will be considered a radio edit, not the actual 45 version.

This is the exact same version that appears on The Classic Chillout Album (Epic 86337) various artist CD, though Pat comments in the 10th edition that this is "neither the 45 or LP version". I don't have a copy of "Ascension" on an official promo CD single release, but I came across one on the web with the following track listing and printed run times:

I have a correction of sorts that needs to be inserted at this point regarding the song "Satisfied" by Richard Marx. In the 10th edition I state that the 45 of this song really runs (4:10) not (3:58) as stated on the record label. This much is true but what I failed to mention was that this 45 was a promo vinyl 45 not a commercial 45. As far as I know, the commercial 45 label states a time of (4:10) and really runs (4:10).

Comments: I can recall the Radio Remix being played on Top 40 radio, so I'm inclined to count this as an official radio edit. I don't remember hearing the Burn Rubber Remix on the airwaves. If it did get airplay, I don't think it was played enough to have a significant impact on the song's overall chart performance. Thus, I won't consider this a radio edit. I don't have a cassette or vinyl 45 copy of this single, so I don't know which version appears on it and how long it runs. Whitburn lists the single's run time at 4:19, but I doubt this is accurate. I'll use this time until someone can verify otherwise.

hey todd......the song "ooops up" by snap that was issued on the arista 2060 cassingle runs 4:25 and is nowhere to be found on cd..........both the usa promo cd single AND the uk issued commercial cd single have an edit version that runs 3:59 or 4:01 ONLY.........the 4:25 cassingle version (ie the official single version) i CANNOT find anywhere.........does the moderator have any input on this matter.......edtop40

hey todd......a minor correction..........regarding don henley's song "the heart of the matter" that was issued in 1990 on the geffen 19898 cassingle.....the cassingle states the "edit/remix" is on the "a" side of the cassingle...........but acctually the version that is on the cassingle is the "ac edit" that is on the promo cd single.......CONCLUSION: the "edit/remix" version that is on the promo cd single IS NOT the same as the "edit/remix" that is on the cassingle.........this might just be a mislabelling issue on the promo cd single and nothing more.....but, we do want to be as thorough as possible on this site........please make note..........edtop40
