Ron, you might want to update your entry for Vienna in your notes for the Just Can't Get Enough series.

The version on Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the '80s vol. 2 is a failed attempt at recreating the single version. Living in Oblivion: The 80's Greatest Hits vol. 5 has the correct single version.

The album version segues from the previous track with a deep synth drone; CDs put the beginning of the song where the first beat comes in. The total duration is then 4:54, and the vocal comes in at 0:24. At the very end, there's a synth chord which is held, then fades suddenly as a phase effect makes the overall pitch rise.

The single version, total duration about 4:37, is the meat of the album version. As compared to the album version, it starts on the downbeat at 12 seconds in, so the vocals come in at 0:12. The ending is faded better so you can't really hear the pitch rise.

What they did wrong on Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the '80s vol. 2 is they cut off an extra bar from the album version's intro, so the vocal starts at 0:09, and they didn't fade the end.

Nice find!

Yes, it appears that Rhino's Just Can't Get Enough Vol. 2 (1994) does indeed cut off the first four beats of the song (about three seconds of material), and fades later than EMI's Living In Oblivion Vol. 5 (1995). Rhino's Left Of The Dial has its mastering based on Just Can't Get Enough, so this set has the same issues as JCGE.

I have the track on nine European compilations. All match Living In Oblivion.

Good ear!
There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.
