does anyone know if the sped up 45 version of the police's song "roxanne" is available anywhere on cd........so everyone knows........the 45 issued in 1979 on A&M 2096 runs 3:00 in length and is the exact same version as the cd box set version only sped up to run 3:00 while the cd box set version runs 3:10.......can anyone shed any light on this??????

I noticed that the database makes the comment "the LP length is (3:10) while the 45 length is (3:02)," indicating an early fade. Should the comment make note of the speed difference instead?

there is no early fade, it's is simply a speed issue....a 0:08 speed differential...

One question--are the opening notes of "Roxanne" kinda out of tune with the rest of the song (at least that's how it sounds on my Every Breath You Take: The Classics CD)?

It's always sounded like that to me, too, like the chord shifts up a note....

I just retimed the 45 and came up with the same running time that I report in the database which is (3:02). Then I A/B'd the dj 45 (matrix number 12554-S S1)and found the 45 to be slightly faster than the LP version found on the "Outlandos d"Amour" cd but not fast enough to make up for the :09 timing difference between the 45 and the LP which would have made the single sound like a Chipmunks record if that were true. Then I counted the number of "Roxannes" mentioned on the cd between 2:12 and the end of the song and counted 17 on the cd and 15 on the 45 which to me makes up the majority of the :09 timing difference. Perhaps the commercial single is different from the dj single but I would doubt it. Anyone else wish to count the number of Roxannes on the 45 and LP starting at 2:12????

As far as the first few notes that don't sound right, I mentioned it in another post. There's a mastering problem on the box set and The Classics where the song starts slow and gradually speeds up to the correct speed by about (0:03).

Are you referring to the discord during the opening seconds of "Roxanne" where it sounds like someone momentarily slams the piano keys? I heard Sting explain this in a radio interview several years ago. He says the guy who played piano on that recording (I can't remember if he said it was one of the band members or a studio musician) was goofing around and sat on the piano keys and tried to play them with his posterior. This drew a hearty laugh from Sting which is clearly audible in the song's intro. Sting says he liked the spontaneity in that session take and left it intact on the actual recording! |
