Can anyone catalog (and describe) the clean radio edits available promotionally of this hit? I've heard a couple of different ones over the years.
Thanks! Andy |

I got this!
The only two US promo CD singles I've come across are: DPRO 6651 1. Clean Top 10 Edit* (listed & actual 4:21) 2. Smooth Instrumental Mix (listed & actual 4:20) The credits below the track list state *Available on Ice Cube - The Predator Clean Album #57185. I also have the clean full-length CD of The Predator, and I can say that cut 1 from the promo CD matches it exactly. This version samples "Footsteps In The Dark" by the Isley Brothers. DPRO 6654 (Remix) 1. Radio Remix Version (listed & actual 4:30) 2. Radio Remix Vocal Edit* (listed 4:30; actual 4:29) 3. Remix Instrumental (listed & actual 4:30) 4. Top 10 Edit (listed & actual 4:21) 5. Smooth Instrumental Mix (listed & actual 4:20) The credits on this promo state *Additional Vocal Edit for cut 2. The word "ass" has been censored by dubbing in the instrumental. The remix on cuts 1 to 3 sample "Let's Do It Again" by the Staple Singers. The Top 10 Edit on this promo is, again, exactly the same as the Clean Top 10 Edit on the first promo. No additional lyrics have been censored. When compared with the explicit version, the Clean Top 10 Edit is a completely different vocal take with alternate lyrics. The Remix Radio Version is yet another completely different vocal take with alternate lyrics (but the same lyrics as the Clean Top 10 Edit). I remember when the song was a hit, MTV censored the word "chronic," but this was never censored on any of the promo CD singles. |

To Aaron:
Which version had the word "butt" instead of "ass"? The 'Top 10 Edit'? Andy |

I have the Radio Remix Vocal Edit in my library. Is the
Top 10 Edit actually considered the 'hit' version? |

Andy, they all have both words, except the Radio Remix Vocal Edit. The
only line with "ass" is in the first verse: "I gotta go 'cause I got me a drop top, and if I hit the switch I can make the ass drop." All other lyrics use the word "butt" where the explicit lyrics have "ass." |

John, although I don't own the cassette single, it has the Radio Version
on side A. As far as I know, the Radio Version and the Clean Top 10 Edit are exactly the same. The Radio Remix was, for whatever reason, serviced by TM Century, but I would not consider this the hit. My local top 40 stations never played the song at all, but i remember it being played regularly on MTV, and it's the original mix (the one used for Radio Version aka Top 10 Edit) in the video. The only place I saw this back then was on MTV. I don't recall hearing it on the radio at all.
Further for trivia purposes, the song samples the Isley Brothers' "Footsteps in the Dark" and "Sexy Mama" by The Moments. Back when MTV stood for Music TV.... |

What's the difference on the "radio version" that appears
on the 12" single? |

As far as I know, the "Radio Version" is the same as the clean album version, which is also the same as the (Clean) Top 10 Edit. Different names for the same version.
