not a top 40 but a 1986 rock staple, does anyone know what
the differences are between the 4:49 45 version and the
5:00 lp version?.....is it just an early fade?....if so,
what are the fade points?...i do not own the vinyl 45

Ed, unless someone beats me to it, I'll pull out the stock 45 and send you a dub. I'm 99% certain I have it.

Ed, I recreated this a few years back, but I didn't keep notes so I'd have to A-B first then post my findings.

I can tell you the 45 actually runs 5:00 (the LP runs 6:49), it is not just an early fade, and there is more than one edit point. I'll look into it as soon as I can.

The 45 version, along with other 45 versions (I presume)
is on this cd:

The Moody Blues - The Singles+

I would avoid The Singles+ in general, as it contains many unsuccessfully recreated single versions. They did get a few mostly right though and if memory serves TOSOL is accurately edited until the fade out, which begins 2-3 seconds later, but lasts the same length as the 45.

An example of an incorrect recreation on that comp is Your Wildest Dreams (the lead single from TOSOL) - theirs is an edit of the LP mix, while the 45 was a remix/edit.

In addition to being an early fade, the 25 second intro is shortened to a 15
second intro, and the interlude before the second verse is cut from 40
seconds to 30 seconds.

Remove 0:05 to 0:15 seconds.

Remove 2:21 to 2:31 seconds.

Start the fade after Justin finishes saying tonight at 4:50 and you have the
edit.

"The Singles+" also sources several tracks from the "This
Is The Moody Blues" compilation. Therefore, several
tracks begin or end with a crossfade from a completely
separate song. Quite a mess, disappointingly.

Just discovered that the 45 versions of The Other Side Of
Life, Your Wildest Dreams and I Know You're Out There
Somewhere are on a huge collection from the Moody Blues
called The Polydor Years: 1986-1992, available on
Amazon and iTunes.

I have a version of this song on the "Timeless Flight" CD that runs 4:59, music fades out at 4:56. But I can't say for sure if it's the 45 version since I don't have the 45 to compare.
