The promo 45 that I've owned forever for this song, confirmed as
Columbia 11231, has basically identical labels on both sides. Both sides say (and are) stereo, and both sides have a listed time of (3:58). But it actually contains two different versions of the song, however. One side of it has handwritten deadwax info of "ZSS 167163 1B", starts out with the :02 second "breaking glass" intro, and runs an actual length of (3:59). The other side of it has handwritten deadwax info of "ZSS 167164 1B", omits the entire breaking glass intro, and runs an actual length of (3:57). Aside from the intro, to me the two versions sound identical. Both of my commercial 45 copies exactly mimic the with-sfx side of my promo 45, have a listed time of (3:58) and an actual time of (3:59). Edited by jimct |

I always wondered if the radio stations cut out the glass sound effect. Now I know for sure a "radio version" does exist on this song. Thanks for posting.

This is interesting... I always figured radio stations wanting to opt out of the :02 "breaking glass" intro on Billy Joel's "You May Be Right" just simply cued passed it. Good to know this is actually an official radio edit!

I just got my copy in the mail and 34 years later am listening to my mint copy of this record...so cool! Has anyone clocked out the actual LP version? From memory I think it may be a few seconds longer (I remember Billy giving an "ugh ugh ugh ugh" at the very end from when I was a kid which is not on this promo 45 copy).

Can anyone confirm the actual vinyl LP run time for "You May Be Right"?

I found it interesting that when Billy Joel performed this song on Jimmy Fallon about a month ago, the first sound you heard was that of the breaking glass.

When they do play it on the radio these days I love the feeling I get the instant I hear that glass break. Can anyone that worked in radio back in the day tell us what they did back then?
My Glass Houses CD and Greatest Hits Version clocks out at 4:09. |

Is the 45 version an early fade of the LP version, and if it is, what time on the LP Version does it start to fade? |
