I have Rod Bernard's "This Should Go on Forever" on the UK import CD The Golden Age of American Rock 'n' Roll Volume 10 (Ace 850), which lists the song on the rear tray insert as being the "American Bandstand version". Does this differ in some way from the U.S. commercial 45 (which I don't have) and, if so, how?

I had read somewhere, can't recall where, that the Bandstand version was
recorded in response to Dick Clark receiving a letter indicating that certain lines in the original recording of the song were "immoral" |

That's interesting, TI and DC. Perhaps Mr. Clark was concerned with the last line of the chorus, "If it`s wrong to really love you / I`ll forever live in sin" or the line during the bridge, "If it`s sin to really love you / Then a sinner I will be." Have either of these lines been altered on the Ace CD?
The most famous example of Dick Clark insisting that a sanitized version of a song be recorded before he would let the artist perform it on American Bandstand is Lloyd Price's "Stagger Lee". The American Bandstand version, which has a happy ending, was issued on the Collectables 45 (most likely in error). |

Looks like you're both on to something, David and Paul... On the "Bandstand Version" of "This Should Go on Forever", the third and fourth verses of the chorus are: "If it's wrong to really love you/Then so wrong I've always been". And the verses during the bridge are: "If it's wrong to hug and kiss you/Oh, my soul will never be free".
I currently don't have a copy of the hit version, so thanks for providing the lyrics, Paul. (And, my, how times have radically changed with Top 40 music lyrics over the past 20-25 years.) Edited by Todd Ireland |

I just picked up a copy of the Swamp Gold - Volume One various artists CD and unfortunately "This Should Go on Forever" sounds like it was mastered from vinyl, just like on a number of other CDs. Can anyone confirm if any of the remaining database CDs have the song mastered from a tape source?

In my ongoing quest to acquire a decent sounding CD source containing the hit version of Rod Bernard's "This Should Go on Forever", I just picked up a copy of his Swamp Rock 'n' Roller import CD issued by the usually fabulous Ace UK label. Although "This Should Go on Forever" on this disc is indeed the correct version and taken from a tape source, the audio transfer is marred somewhat by a high pitched tone, or "hum", throughout the recording, which is most noticeable during the intro and outro. It sounds like Ace even uncharacteristically used some noise reduction in an attempt to subdue the unwelcome hum. (For the record, I don't hear this high pitched tone at all on the crackly vinyl transfer used on the previously mentioned Swamp Gold - Volume One CD.
Meanwhile, it appears all the song's database CD entries that do not have a "mastered from vinyl" comment are out-of-print and fairly pricey. Can anyone attest to the song's sound quality on any of these discs before I consider dropping any further hard-earned cash on one of them? This is becoming a rather frustrating (and expensive) endeavor! Edited by Todd Ireland |
