About a year ago, I picked up a used promo CD for 25 cents at the library for Ace of Base "Don't Turn Around." It came in a plain jewel case with a neon green sticker on the front that simply said, "Ace of Base, Don't Turn Around, New Version." At the bottom of the front of the jewel case there is a white sticker stamped "Received Jul 06 1994." The CD inside is factory-pressed and unmarked -- completely blank silver surface.

It contains one version of the song running an exact 3:37. It's definitely not the Single Version. It starts out with a rising, warbling tone, like a flying saucer taking off in some '50s sci-fi film, then a female voice speaks, "I will survive... without you." Then the beat starts.

Hard to describe the mix, except to say that it's definitely different from the Single Version and the Groove Mix Extended, which are the only other versions I own.

I'm not seeing this promo listed on Discogs, and I also do not see this running time listed for any version listed in Discogs.

Any of our long-time DJs receive this promo as well, or know if this mix was issued elsewhere under another name?

Brian, the "Single Version" on my promo CD (the only one I have) runs 3:48 (printed 3:47). It starts off the same way you describe with the rising sound effect and spoken female voice. Does your "Single Version" start differently?

ASCD-2691
1. Single Version (listed 3:47; actual 3:48)
2. Radio Groove Mix (listed 3:40; actual 3:43)
3. Groove Mix Extended (listed 5:15; actual 5:18)

Brian, back in the early 90's, Arista must've issued at least 6-8 different
promo CD single "remixes" this same way - no writing on the face, and some
sort of jewel case sticker notation. But just about every time we got one like
this into the station, I found that if I checked the inner ring of the CD itself
(equivalent to the deadwax info on a 45), I could almost always seem to
locate an "ASCD-####" stock # on there, that at times helped me to at least
get more details on it. Does that "Don't Turn Around" promo happen to
include this type of info on the inner ring?

God, I'm stupid. The "New Version" is an edit of the Single Version, cutting out the rap late in the song. I didn't recall the single version starting out like that, so I didn't check. How embarrassing. So I guess this could be qualified as "Single Version - No Rap."

Jim, FYI, the numbers on the inner ring are ASCD2736 and 7/94 1DA1.

Don't be embarrassed, Brian! I'm pretty sure all of us single variation enthusiasts has had moments like this. :)

Also, I had no idea they serviced a version that removes the rap so thanks for sharing info on this promo!

Odd that they would release an edit without the rap at the
end, yet leave the "I will survive" intro intact...most
stations, including the one I worked at edited off that
part of the intro.

This song came out when I first started working in radio, and we always played it with the intro intact. The rapless edit is a simple quick overlap/crossfade at the 2:42 mark. It goes something like this:

...say to you don't gooooooooooooo...
                                  don't turn around...

The overlap is a very quick fade of the word "go" as it overlaps the first syllable of "around."
