Hi all,
About "Tonight I Fell In Love"... i notice a few cd's list a "re-recording" in the DB. I have a buddy asking if their re-done stereo version from their 1968 Buddah LP "Both Sides Now" has appeared on a CD anywhere. That version took the original mono one and they added new vocals and instruments over it. I was wondering if the re-recording on CD is the same as the Buddah LP, or is it a totally newer version? thanks for any input. MM |

Mark, I own one of the two database CDs with the "re-recording"
specified: The Varese "Best Of The B.T. Puppy Years: 1964-67." Some back story: B.T. Puppy was kind of an "outgrowth" of the Tokens' own music publishing company, Bright Tunes. And while they and their buddies, The Happenings, had hits on the label, it really wasn't a "typical record label", per se. It was a very small, in-house label operation. The Tokens were just a bunch of longtime friends, whose primary interests had always been songwriting and producing, but who also enjoyed singing, recording and performing as well. But for them, recording, despite a lot of total output over the years, had evolved into much more of a hobby, by around 1964, when they left RCA. They then set up B.T. Puppy, mainly to record their own demos, and also to release a few self- produced 45s. They'd tired of having RCA "ram the latest trend down their throats", like with their very respectable 1964 Jan & Dean/Beach Boys styled non-hit, "Let's Go To The Drag Strip." Back to your question: The "Tonight I Fell In Love" version on the B.T.Puppy Years disc is noted as a "bonus track" (since it wasn't recorded between 64-67), and states on the CD insert that the track came off of the 1970 B.T. Puppy LP, "Greatest Moments Of The Tokens." Once they hit with "I Hear Trumpets Blow" in '67, WB agreed to let them self-produce, so they briefly signed there. Then, in '68, the same deal was offered by Buddah. But by 1970, that ended as well, so they briefly "re-activated" B.T. Puppy, to issue that 1970 LP, with "new re-recordings" of their first two hits. Mark, I do *not* believe that Varese CD features the version of the song that is on the "Both Sides Now" LP on Buddah. The tip: licensing. All 18 tracks are B.T. Puppy recordings. None of their WB or Buddah recordings were cross-licensed. (The earlier, 14-track Taragon Hits CD had spanned all their hit years and various labels, but without providing much "depth.") But all is *not* lost for your buddy: Amazon does currently show an Australian import CD for "Both Sides Now", on Rev-Ola, for $14.99 + shipping. If I were him, I wouldn't gamble elsewhere. He wants a specific re-recording of a particular song. I recommend this one to him. Good luck! Edited by jimct |

Jim,
Thanks so much for the excellent background info as well the Rev-Ola cd re-issue alert! I sent him the Amazon link and he said he will be ordering it, as i told him i've actually heard of that label and since its connected to Cherry Red, should be a nice re-issue from tapes. He was sold by the bonus tracks too. Funny, i have so few of vinyl LP's left here in the house, but i checked my shelf and i do indeed still have that Buddah LP. I was thrilled when Varese included the awesome "She Let's Her Hair Down" on one their "Sunshine Days" collections. I notice i made an error on its year, the single charted in 1969 and the Buddah LP was also 1970. Thanks again! MM |

The Both Sides Now website lists the Greatest Moments With The Tokens lp on B.T. Puppy as having the following track lineup: BTPS-1012 - The Greatest Moments with the Tokens - Tokens [1970] On The Go/Happy Now/Nobody But You/Oh Cathy/Cherry/You're My Girl/He's In Town/Snow Queen/Little Girl-Little Girl/Carolina On My Mind/The Greatest Moments In A Girl's Life I don't see either of their first two hits on this album... nor are they included on the Tokens Of Gold LP (BTPS-1006). It's possible the version on that cd came off of the Very Best Of The Tokens (BTPS-1028) since I can't seem to find a track lineup for this LP online... Looking at the BSN website, the B.T. Puppy website was actively issuing vinyl from 1966 to 1972 and then was re-launched in the cd era starting in 1993 where the company is still around today though not very active with re-releasing material... |

Thanks for that, Tom. The source info for these tracks attempts to be
incredibly specific; even to the point of providing different colored "circles" and "squares", next to each track's listing. Strangely, it seems Varese "re- used" the exact same colored circle symbol twice, for two distinct sources. Once for my earlier-cited LP, and, upon closer inspection, I also just noticed a second source listed, for that exact same, colored circle symbol: "From the CD, 'Oldies Are Now', B.T. Puppy 0519, 1993". Perhaps that's where these two tracks were truly culled for this comp. Man, if all these CD insert details were meant to enlighten buyers, it's clearly a fail. At this point, not owning these original pieces, for me to try to make further sense out of all of these symbols, I'd need to hire a private investigator! |
