I recently had to research the true single versions of
Seduction's 4 top 40 hits. These are mentioned in an older thread, but i felt this one needed a new thread. with the help of edtop40, i believe this needs a database update. Per Ed: "my vinyl 45 issued as vendetta 1464 has a printed run time of 4:13 on the label for the "7" remix " The actual run time for the 45 is 4:12 (thanks for the dub, Ed) ..this would also be the same as the promo cd single listed. There is no version that runs 4:16, that was an error. Ed's cassette single has the same 7" remix, but ran much slower and timed out to 4:19. However, as we tend to agree, cassette run times are not reliable. This is for several reasons including the high-speed manufacturing process (one could buy several new cassettes of the same song and have them run slightly different speeds) and of course the tape mechanism along with the tape itself degrades with time, and they can drag. There is another mix that was on the promo cd called the "original 7" mix" - for those interested, that is an edit of the LP version and also times out to 4:12. It has 2 simple edits in it. MM |

My commercial Vendetta 45 has the 7" edited mix that I heard on the radio in 1990, and the lower-pitched version on the other side. I'll have to dig it out for the printed times.

Could someone post the edit points for turning the LP version into the "original 7" mix" (if everyone agrees that was the version played on the radio)?
Is this the LP edit? If it is, I can figure out the edit points myself... I just don't have ANY copies of this song, apparently... I'll have to correct that as this entered the charts November 1989. |

I always considered the standard pitch version (which was on my stock A&M 45-rpm disc) to be the definitive radio version. This one listed below
The "Real" single ... LOL Some stations played the higher-pitched version that NightAire lined to (which was the 7" version that I have on a 12" single), but I don't think that's just a remix. Is that not a completely different recording? Edited by Jody Thornton |

Jody, you are correct. The "7" remix" is a completely
different recording performed in a lower key. The tempo between the 2 is the almost the same but all the instruments and vocals are at a much lower key on the 45. For Gene, yes your video is the "original 7" mix" which is an edit of the LP version in the higher key. Jody's video is the "7" remix" recorded in the lower key. For the life of me, I've been A/B-ing these 2 and I can't remember what I heard on the radio at the time. I didn't buy the 45 so I had no comparison to notice different versions. I'm sure I heard both of them though because each has small mix overdubs that I recall hearing before. I bought the LP the following year so the song was no longer a current. But the "7" remix" appears to be the official 45 version. MM |

I don't think the higher pitched version is a re-
recording. I think the pitch of everything in it was digitally changed by resampling. I think this is one of those cases where radio played what it wanted. Some played the album version, some played the lower-pitched edit, and sme the higher-pitched edit. |

Hmmmm The LP version (and higher pitched edit - which I think are both the same mix/session), don't sound entirely natural to me. The lower-pitched version sounds as it would likely have sounded naturally (as separate tracks of course). Would resampling with digital tape have been that advanced back in 1989? I really don't know.

I would love to know about the technology available back then. The
earliest recording I have heard that has some sort of resampling is "Beatles Movie Medley" from 1982. If you try to sync up "A Hard Day's Night" from the medley with the stereo CD version, you'll see that the medley is in the same key/pitch but runs slower by quite a bit. You can even hear some sort of audio degradation on the medley, which is typical when trying to "time stretch" audio. |

Here's what's on my promo:
CD 17914 1. 7" Remix (listed 4:13; actual 4:12) 2. Original 7" (listed 4:13; actual 4:12) 3. The Cole/Cliviles Club Mix (listed & actual 6:22) 4. The Hip House Vocal Mix (listed & actual 6:19) I'm going to have to side with Mark on this one. It's not a "pitch shift" difference. The higher key version is a completely different recording. The vocal inflections are not the same between the two, even if you were to lower the key of the original 7"/LP version. |
