Just wondering if there was ever a promo 45 for Poco's "Heart of the Night" containing a shorter edit or length than the 45/LP version?

That's a negatory on that, good buddy! All my stock/promo 45s were the
same length, although our station surely wouldn't have minded MCA doing a short promo for it! That was also right around the time of the "ABC to MCA" 1979 label conversion, so perhaps some "label transition chaos" existed. Poco's previous 45, "Crazy Love", had all pressings I've seen on ABC, but you could tell later 45 pressings were done through MCA. Both that and "Heart Of The Night" were from the same LP, "Legend." |

This song was on a k-tel album called Certified Gold way back in like 1980. I wonder if they used the full length version or edited it down. They tended to use 45 versions or fade the songs early if there wasn't a short version. However, Certified Gold was one of their year-end 2-record sets, and on those they usually put less songs on each side of the record, and as a result often used full length versions. For instance, I still have the 1982 album Hit List because it's the only place I've EVER found zappa's hit Valley Girl with a clean end--on the CDs I've found from Zappa, i believe it sort of begins to fade but then cuts abruptly and segues right into the next song or something like that. On the k-tel record, it actually does the fade longer and then finishes with a distinct cold end--making it much better for putting in you 80s playlist on your ipod!
Anyway, back to the Poco song. I don't have the vinyl anymore since I eventually got every song from it on CD, so I can't even really help. But maybe someone else on the boards has it and can let you know if there's a shorter version on that album. |

Veering off topic I realize, but the 12" single of "Valley Girl" also has the clean ending. |
