Are there any good sounding mono sources for "Shout (Parts 1 & 2)"? All CDs that I've found it on are really muddy. The stereo version sounds decent, but there are some things out of phase. When you fold it down, some of the instrumentation disappears.
One other thing about the stereo versions on CD is that the beginning of Part 2 is clipped. At the false ending of the mono version, the organ note comes in at full volume. The stereo version is truncated at this point, as if Part 1 fades out quickly and then Part 2 slightly fades back in. Are stereo LP copies this way? Is there a mono LP, and if so, does it sound better than what's on CD? |

further to aaron's request, when did the stereo mix first appear? Was it ever
in stereo on the 1959 "Shout" LP"? My guess it was mixed to stereo in the CD era, as it was then that the extended cold ending version first appeared I believe. |

Hi David,
Yes, the extended ending first appeared on the their Rhino hits CD, however the stereo mix dates well back into the vinyl era. My first copy of both parts 1 and 2 in stereo was an RCA V/A comp. From the cover and label I'd estimate it was from around 1962. Sorry I can't recall the exact name, it was something like "Olden Golden" and it was in a gold cover. Parts 1 and 2 in stereo were the last 2 cuts on the LP. Part 2 faded on the LP. That Rhino CD was the first place I ever heard it run the end of the session, and I'd assume that's the lowest generation tape there is. MM MM |

Markie, the V/A LP you are referring to was issued around 11/1963. It was
titled, "Old 'N' Golden Goodies" (RCA 2740). This LP was issued in both mono and stereo, although songs like Mickey & Sylvia's 1956 hit "Love Is Strange", (and others) surely didn't play in stereo, as it was recorded in mono. This LP featured all RCA recordings, except for "The Happy Organ". Strangely, there was a Vol. 2 issued, with this same title, in the summer of 1966, as M/ST RCA 3641. I only mention this because "Shout" appears on here, too, except with Part I only included this time. But that later V/A comp doesn't actually appear to be the song's stereo debut. My research just turned up a late 1959 "Shout!" LP release, as RCA 2156, issued in both mono and "Living Stereo". According to the stereo album's back cover, Side 2 of this LP ends with "Shout (Part I)" (2:15), followed by "Shout (Part II)" (2:10). Edited by jimct |

I have the stereo LP titled "Shout!" RCA 2156 and here are the particulars. Part 1 is track 5 of side 2, has a stated running time of (2:15) and an actual running time of (2:13). Part 2 is track 6 of side 2 and has a stated running time of (2:10) but actually runs (2:08). There are 4 seconds of silence between the two tracks which means the total running time would be (4:25). Yes the organ comes in at full volume at the beginning of Part 2.

Thanks for the refresher, Jim! Yup, that was the LP. And yes, it was a mixture of true stereo with re-channeling done for the older tracks.
Sound on it was very good, though, quiet vinyl and crisp EQ. MM |
