The version of Don't Cross The River on History: America's Greatest Hits differs from the version on Homecoming and I assume the original single which was released from the album. In addition to the History version being a much "wetter" mix, there is a brief fiddle overdub at 1:20 that is not present on the original version. I know the box set features the album version, but not sure about the other compliations.

I believe all the selections on America's Greatest Hits are remixed.

That splice at 1:20 on the original 45/Homecoming LP mix was pretty obvious; it isn't even noticeable on the History remix.

In the singles department, this is another one of those head-scratchers. Notice the timing differences shown on the U.S. mono DJ and stereo stock 45s. The actual times are (2:24) for the DJ 45 and (2:29) for the stock 45.

I know what you're thinking: "Since when is 2:29 too long for radio?" The hook repeats quite a few times at the end for a record this short, so Warners simply made the fadeout steeper on the promo, thereby eliminating the last full repetition of the hook. If you really want to pop open the hood and check the timing belt, the stock 45 runs a wee bit faster than the DJ 45.
