Does anyone know if the album version can be edited down to the single version? I don't see a commercial CD with the single version...

I appreciate the offer, Dan! Thanks to John, I can now confirm that you are correct: the single version CAN be edited from the LP version. Here's how I did it, with two simple edits and an early fade:

I'm working with the LP version from the source LP/CD, "11." My track has 1.033 seconds of silence before the guitar lick starts so if your file is tighter you should subtract about a second from the numbers below.

Take out 16 beats between 3:39 and 3:47 (7.725 seconds).

This one is an easy edit on the cymbal crash of "4."

Take out 32 beats between 3:45 and 4:09 (15.53 seconds).

I think they may have edited on the downbeat where he sings "I'll" but I found it easier to find a clean edit point at the snare on the next word ("take"). That first beat is identical to my ears, but the first beat is where it falls a hair out of sync with the LP version and for purists I thought it was worth mentioning.

What remains fades to silence before the lyric "I'll say anything..." starts again at 4:09. I hear the drum fill right before it on the single, but the world "I'll" isn't on there.

Once the silence at the beginning is removed, your copy should run 4:08 just as mention in the post that started this thread. Speed differences were negligible enough to not be worth mentioning; it was so little that it was easily the difference between two analog machines.
