The actual commercial 45 run time of Kenny Rogers with Kim Carnes' "Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer" is 3:38. (Thanks once again to Abagon for relaying the timing info. The printed record label time is 3:36.) I only mention this because the song's database CD entries run from 3:37-3:42.

Todd, it is a typo. The printed record label time is "3:37".

I was comparing "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer" from Kenny's Greatest Hits to Kim's Gypsy Honeymoon, and I noticed there are subtle mix differences. I wonder if there is a 45 and LP distinction that needs to be made.

- reverb on the vocals is slightly different between the two
- strings are mixed louder during Kim's vocals on the first verse
- drums/percussion mixed differently with different reverb

Unless someone beats me to it, I'll retrieve my stock 45 and compare to the CD versions as soon as possible.

I pulled my stock copy, and the mix matches the Kenny Rogers Greatest Hits CD. That would mean the version on Kim Carnes Gypsy Honeymoon is either a "neither" version or an LP version. I do not have Kenny's Gideon LP to be able to check.

Aaron,

I checked Number Ones and it seems to match the
description you have for Greatest Hits.

I have the song on Gypsy Honeymoon and you can
definitely hear a difference.

I was listening to Sirius recently and heard an
alternate version of this song featuring different
vocals from both Rogers and Carnes. Does anyone know
whether and why this song was re-recorded?

Kenny re-recorded a number of his Liberty/EMI hits for a
hit collection when he made the move to Reprise records.

Kenny was always the King of Compilations. Problem was
they often did not include the original versions of his
hits. I'm surprised he was able to recruit one of his
many duet partners to re-record the song with him. (I'm
even more surprised that Sirius would play this version
instead of the hit recording.)

To Scanner:

It seemed that almost every time Kenny changed labels,
the newer label would issue a compilation containing a
few re-recordings of the previous label's hits...

The most egregious example was when he was on
Liberty/EMI he released a smattering of First Edition
recuts without the charm of the Reprise originals.
