STEVE MARTIN & THE TOOT UNCOMMONS - "King Tut"
"King Tut" on the "A Wild And Crazy Guy" U.S. vinyl LP (Warner HS 3238 released in 1978) includes an applause by audience first :02 in the music portion and the ending. (The listed time is "2:56" on the LP label). But this song on the CD "Dr. Demento 20th Anniversary Collection" doesn't have the applause. The length of the music portion on the LP is the same as the Dr. Demento CD (2:09). --abagon |

Has anyone determined if there was a single mix (without applause) and an album mix? If so, seems like the database would need updating.

I know for a fact the single did not have applause.
My friend had the LP and he was disappointed by the applause. To me it seemed as if the single was added to the LP with the sound of applause. If you strip the sound away to me it always sounded like the 45. The Dr. Demento disc definatly has the 45 version. |

The Dr. Demento 20th Anniversary Collection (1991) has the 45 version (no applause) from a tape source, and it sounds great.
There's a hard-to-find disc on Time Life/Rhino called The Dr. Demento Collection - The Late '70s (1996) that is digitally identical to the 20th CD. (That's right - it has both the Time-Life and Rhino logos on it.) The Time-Life CD Sounds Of The Seventies - AM Nuggets (1993) isn't a digital clone, but uses the same analog transfer as the 20th CD, and sounds extremely close to it. The version on Razor & Tie's 2-CD Suddenly '70s (1997) is taken from a vinyl 45. (Mastered by Steve Hoffman, no less!) Avoid if possible. And I seem to remember that Steve Martin's backing band on the song is the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, although I haven't seen that in writing... |

Is the commercial single of this in stereo? Unlike most Warner Bros. promo copies of that era which are mono/stereo my copy of this is mono only, with a different song on the B side.

Commercial 45 has no applause and is in Stereo. Excellent sounding 45. Playing time is 2:09!
