although not released in a commercial format there was a promo cd single issued for the song "a change will do you good" by sheryl crow.....

amcdp0043
1-a change will do you good "lp version" 3:50

the song peaked on the billboard airplay charts at number 19 in the summer of 1997...is there any reason the song is NOT in the db?

Ed:

I don't think Pat includes airplay-only hits prior to December 1998 in the database because such songs weren't eligible to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 without a commercial single release.

Todd, I think our buddy Ed might be onto something here, though. And we all know that Pat uses his "proprietary mix of all charts of the era" for his database. That being said, though, in the latest edition of RR's Hot 100 Annual (until 2005), they smartly (and finally) went ahead and just "re-ordered" all the hits of each year, without regard to whether it was issued as a single or not. With so few songs appearing as singles in recent years, how could you not? "A Change Will Do You Good" now appears as a Top 40-peaking hit in 1997, and within the Top 100 hits of the year. Other, revised 1997 "Top 40 hits, but non-singles" are, to make my point:

--Sugar Ray-Fly
--Will Smith-Men In Black
--Cardigans-Lovefool
--Wallflowers-One Headlight
--OMC--How Bizarre
--Matchbox 20--Push
--Counting Crows--A Long December
--Bob Carlisle-Butterfly Kisses
--Tonic-If You Could Only See
--BlackStreet-Don't Leave Me
--Mariah Carey-Butterfly
--Dave Matthews Band-Crash Into Me

15 other 1997 "airplay songs" now also appear/peak within the Top 40 positions of the Hot 100 Annual. After a quick grance inside Pat's database, none of these songs seem to appear (which is Ed's original point, I guess.) I'm not tryin' to give Pat extra work or anything, but, given RR's complete policy reversal/current inclusion & mixing in of these formerly-excluded "90's airplay only hits" with all the others, it might be wise for Pat to give this issue a fresh look here. Any other opinions on it?

Jim, I've brought up this topic before. I'll see if I can dig up the old posts on it.

Jim, all the songs you list were bonafide hits, even if they weren't released commercially as singles. I'm all for seeing them included in the database if Pat amends his policy.
