Ran across an edited version of this, and was wondering where it came from.
Most of the versions I have on CD are all about the same length (about 3:28), including:

Sounds like the DJ edit to me as my recreation of the edit runs 2:57.

Interestingly, the album version of this song (which runs in the 5-minute range) is an edit of the single but edited to be longer. However, the Australian LP where the song originates from was also the single version. So the US LP may be the only place in the world where our "album version" exists. It has never been released on CD, but I edited the single version (from CD) to make the album version.

Ron and John, yes, it is the short version of the 2:57/3:28 DJ 45.

Hi Crapfromthepast,
Does your 'Ultimate Party Album' contain the TRUE promo 45 edit, which is a REMIX? Cos if it does, I need to track it down, or get a dub. (The promo 45 edit has a lower-mixed tambourine than the commercial 45.) Andy Edited to add 5/17/09: On new, careful examination I'm now not-so-convinced it was a remix. Very weird thing--my commercial pressing is so distorted in the high end, it appeared to be a very different mix than what I heard on the radio back in '78 (which was ONLY the DJ short version!) The 'Ultimate Party Album' version seems to be similar to the needledrop of the DJ short version that Yah Shure sent me. Edited by AndrewChouffi |

An update, just about 6 years after my original post.
The first version to appear on CD was the promo 45 edit, running 2:56 on Session/Warner Special Products' 2-CD The Ultimate Party Album (1992). It sounds nice here. Bill Inglot unearthed tapes for the proper 45 version for Rhino's Have A Nice Day Vol. 22 (1993), where it runs 3:28. It sounds very nice here. There's a digitally identical clone on:
For the 45 version, go with Rhino's Have A Nice Day Vol. 22 (1993) or Time-Life's AM Gold Vol. 25 1978 (1997). For the promo 45 edit, you can go with The Ultimate Party Album (1992), which is a pretty uncommon disc, or you can make your own edit from Have A Nice Day Vol. 22: Segment 1 Extends from 0:00.0 to 1:53.9 of both the commercial 45 version and the promo 45 edit. Ends on a downbeat in the middle of the word "don't". Remove the 64 beats from 1:53.9 to 2:24.8 of the commercial 45 version. Segment 2 Extends from 2:24.8 to 3:32.0 (end; including outro silence) of the commercial 45 version. Extends from 1:53.9 to 3:01.2 (end; including outro silence) of the promo 45 edit. Your mixdown will run 2:57 (excluding outro silence), or 3:01.2 (including outro silence), with a single edit at 1:53.9. (Note that this differs slightly from my instructions above from 6 years ago. These are correct; the older instructions placed the edit too early by one beat.) Edited by crapfromthepast |

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

Does the 12" exist anywhere on CD?
Also, does anyone know if there are mix differences on the 12" or is it just the 45 looped? I can send a copy if anyone needs it as a reference. -Jeff |

Well, there's the version on the US album - which is longer and a different edit than the 45. So I imagine Pat's database lists all these 3:28 versions as single versions, etc.
The album version only exists on the US LP, and even the original album that came out in Australia first - has the 3:28 version, so the CD release of that album (which was released in Australia only) has just the 3:28 version. You refer to the 12" version, Fetta, I assume this is the same as the US LP version, but I can't say for sure because I don't have a 12" single. I did, however, take the 7" version off a CD (probably the Rhino) one and re-create the longer edit (i.e. the US LP version) from the short version. Luckily, that longer recording on the US LP was simply created from the regular (7") version, so it has no parts that can't be found elsewhere. Edited by EdisonLite |

Does anyone else notice a glitch in the word "Love" at
approximately 2:46. It is (to me) really noticeable on the Time Life Sounds of the Seventies series, but I also notice it on the "Hard to Find" disc (although it is not as noticeable (2:46 timing on above is from the HTF) cd. |

Ron,
Thanks for the editing update from 2015. I always thought the edit before didn't sound right so I followed your instructions from last year. Much better sounding. Kiefer2 - My copy is from AM Gold. With the DJ edit created, there is a slight glitch on the word "love" at 2:17. Not sure if Time-Life had a bad source file or if that was in the original master. |
