Mr. Mansfield, I have been planning to buy the Amazing Rhythm Aces CD. But the one I was just thrilled to see/hear about for the first time was the last one, the Kenny O'Dell "Beautiful People", which I'd buy in a heartbeat. (The "Bubbling Under" tune, "Springfield Plane" got local airplay in my area, and is a personal fave.) Until, that is, I see something I've NEVER seen before. What in the heck is an "exclusive ITunes release?" As a 60's aficianado, I personally don't have the slightest interest in buying a download. I am a "hard-copy only" guy, and I resent having my preferred buying option discontinued. Given the choice between a download or nothing, I will choose nothing, which doesn't help you very much. To me, this is actually a "Varese non-release, with a cruel twist". I realize that there are many people who do buy, and actually prefer, downloads. But I'll bet most are not 50 years of age or older, like I am. I always have and I always will want a "hard copy" of my music. I both have and love my IPod, but I strongly prefer to load in my always-legitimately purchased musical hard copy (for which I have the receipts to prove!) On second thought, Mr. Mansfield, I am now so upset with your new "no CD release" (which I prefer to call your "exclusive IPod release" offering) that I have just decided not to purchase your new Amazing Rhythm Aces CD after all, as a sign of my personal dissatisfaction with your "business decision" to attempt to force me to conform/limit/control my music-buying options. I resent this. I want "Springfield Plane" on CD, NOT a download!!!!! This is simply my opinion, however, and for your label's sake I hope my anger/objections are not widely shared.

Jim, I agree absolutely with your point of view. IPod: nice machine, many good features. Hard Copy: the only way to go!
In addition, a "Hard Copy" includes, in almost every instance, an informative CD booklet regarding the music contained on the CD and the work done by those who made the compilation or reissue possible. Such information is missing in a download. Thanks for taking the lead and stating your opinion on this issue. Dan |

The decision to go Ipod-only may not have been up to Varese Vintage. Licensing fees may have been too high, or perhaps there was sufficient doubt about enough interest to justify a CD release. Let's not jump to conclusions, folks.

I agree with Jim in principle here, as I also tend to avoid downloads with the exception of the occasional current song that's not available any other way (or not worth getting a CD for). I personally avoid Itunes, partly because AFAIK it requires special software to use.
That having been said, I can see the logic behind a download-only release for an obscure artist who barely even made the top 40 with one song. I can't imagine a "greatest hits" package by someone who didn't have any hits would be much of a seller, probably not even recouping production costs (this is not to say I wouldn't seek out something that was an all-time fave of mine, even if it was a stiff). What I don't particularly like is limiting distribution to one source. Alas, the bottom line is "get used to it", as CD sales continue to diminish look for fewer and fewer releases to be available that way. I would guess that most people under 40 have no problems obtaining their music that way. Edited by Hykker |

I can see why the Kenny O'Dell would be an itunes exclusive.... his one hit can be found on cds already (i do believe i have it on the white whale records story from the UK), people wouldn't buy it just to get the one hit.... but i do doubt there are enough people out there that are such diehard fans of his to give the need to put the songs on cd. If they really want it, I think they could make their own cds from their itunes downloads (which i would then hope would be in the highest possible quality on there). Perhaps there could be a special booklet download when one downloads the full cd off itunes too....i dont really buy albums off itunes so i don't know how that would work...but at least it gets the hit available on itunes for people who want just the one song.
