Dumb question perhaps, but why would we want remakes of their songs when we can have the originals? How many of the original members were even still around in 1999? |

I'm sure glad I picked up all the great Varese titles in the 90's.
Sunshine Days, Lost 45's, On the Radio with Dick Bartley, etc. Its been big time lackluster ever since. Who wants rerecorded stuff. That smacks of 80's KTel stuff. |

It's not a matter of us not wanting the remakes. It's a matter of Varese getting re-recordings for much cheaper than they can get the original hit versions. |

The real explanation is much simpler: the Varese CD is marketed to those who don't want or need the originals. Cary Mansfield has a long, successful track record with his company's releases, and not every disc is geared to those who want the original recordings.

This still makes no sense to me. As bwolfe said, this is something K-Tel, Gusto, Dominion or one of the other ripoff labels would do. I expected better from Varese.
The Ventures haven't had a chart hit in almost 40 years...it's not like this is a mass-appeal release that you're gonna find in Walmart. Anyone who's gonna buy a 2 CD set by this band is likely to be a fan...why disappoint them with retread recordings? Why disappoint ANYONE with retread re-recordings? |

There are real diehard Ventures fans out there who want every single track ever laid down by the group, re-recordings included (i do know someone like that, for this group). And to answer a previous question, i believe that in 1999, there were still 3 original members in the group.

Rhino was "the" great reissue label in the early days of compact discs.
Them came Varese who blew their doors off with outstanding artist and various collections. I'm still hoping that Cary has more up his sleeve. I've read that acquiring rights to tracks is becoming more difficult. Maybe with all the work involved the return just isn't there. Plus with the lack of true "music stores" the shelf space just isn't there. Those who really want them will find them somehow. Unfortunately, the casual music fan loses. I noticed that there is a K Tel website saying that they'll soon have a music store. They had some wild original artists discs fifteen years ago that weren't bad. They were abbrviated versions of their old 20 track LP's. Wonder what's up their sleeve this time? |

Let's just hope that K-Tel offers the original recordings and not re-recordings like they currently do on iTunes, Napster etc.
In a perfect world, they'd offer the 45 versions they used to on their vinyl LP's way back. |

A couple of comments:
First, I have tried to access the varesevintage.wordpress.com page in order to find out what out of print CDs are being re-released and every time the site comes up, it immediately knocks me off internet explorer. This is the only internet problem I'm having so I'm wondering if this is a problem with the site itself. Second, there are a number of Varese compilations that are out of print and incredibly hard to locate on ebay, GEMM or other internet outlets (and when you do find them, the prices are absolutely outrageous.) For example, I've been trying to find a copy of "On The Radio" Volume 4 because it's the only place to get Wadsworth Mansion's "Sweet Mary" with the cold ending. Haven't seen it posted anywhere. Why on earth wouldn't Varese put this item back into its catalogue??? There's obviously a market for them out there and even if the price Varese charged were a bit inflated, in a limited release, there would clearly be buyers. Everyone would benefit because Varese would get the profit and those of us looking for these out of print items wouldn't get gauged by re-sellers. If Cary reads the postings in response to his recent one, I would hope that he'd take this information back to his team so that they could consider this. In fact, wouldn't it be great of other forum participants posted their "want list" on the out of print Varese items so he'd know the items that we're looking to purchase if Varese made them available once again?
