Wow, hard to imagine I started this thread almost 10
years ago.

Comparing the Spun Gold reissue 7" to the full version
on the Essentials CD, I see only one edit - a crossfade
running roughly 2:42-2:46, jumping to the verse that
starts at 4:23 ("There was not much more for us to talk
about").

Hard to describe the mechanics precisely but I'll try:
the crossfade starts right after the line "the sky."
After this, a string (violin?) pattern repeats three
times, crossfading into the verse mentioned above. The
verse vocals begin just before the third high note,
which coincides with the word "not" on the downbeat.
