I just finished comparing the vinyl 45 with the so-called ":15 longer than LP length" version from Greatest Hits. These two versions are clearly different mixes. The CD has a tambourine that is not on the 45 version. Does the version on Picture Book also have the tambourine? If so, then the comment should be changed to read "LP version" and ":15 longer than LP version." If not, then the longer versions should actually say "neither" or "remixed."

Ah, but which vinyl 45 were you using, aaronk??? Let's not forget that this song was released twice as a single here in the U.S. - originally as the lead single from "Picture Book" on Elektra 69607 (which flopped), and then again on Elektra 69528 (w/ a different B-side) after "Holding Back the Years" made its #1 chart breakthrough, and thus allowing "Money$ Too Tight" to ride that song's coattails into the top 40 when Elektra decided to re-promote it...

I don't own either "MTT" 45 myself, but were the A-sides the same length/version??? I don't know the answer, but definitely something to consider when attempting to sort this all out...

The version I am referring to is the second issue on Elektra 69528---the hit version. You raise a great point, though. Perhaps the reason the database is saying "LP length" is because Pat's 45 is the earlier non-hit version. I am not familiar with the version on that 45. It very well may be the album version faded early.

The earlier issue on Elektra 69607 has a listed time of 3:38 just like the Elektra 69528 release. I'll compare the two and report back...

the earlier 45 runs 3:42 whereas the latter release runs 3:38 though both labels state 3:38. The difference is merely a four second earlier fade - no edit.

Are the mixes the same on both? The LP and hit 45 mixes are different.

I just put the two 45 versions in the multi-tracker on Cool Edit, and they line up exactly, length and all. It looks like some of those later issued 45s are identical to the first issued ones, also timing out to 3:42. And the mixes on both 45s are the same, which is different from the LP mix.

I was discussing this song with Jeff in a private email, and he came across the 45 version on a compilation CD in his collection that is not listed in the database. Hopefully he will share the details with everyone who may still be looking for the 45 version on CD.

I wanted to add that I own a promo sampler called "Simply the Hits," which also contains the correct 45 version of "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)." The disc is deeply buried and packed away at the moment, but I do have the track list for those interested:

PRCD 4162
1. If You Don't Know Me By Now (printed 3:24)
2. Holding Back The Years (printed 4:09)
3. It's Only Love (printed 4:00)
4. Money's Too Tight (To Mention) (printed 3:43)
