In comparing the Mono DJ side of "The Right Thing To Do" with the Stereo DJ side, there are horns on the mono side starting at around 1:50 that are not on the stereo side.

I don't have a stock 45 so I don't know if it is unique to the DJ or the stock had the extra horns.

Thre were also two DJ copies issued, one with the mono/stereo choice, the other was mono on the A side and a mono version of "We Have No Secrets" on the B side. The mono mix is the same on both DJ copies.

Hi Bill,

I don't currently own a stock copy, but I distinctly remember the label bragging in large BOLD type the word MONO (I always thought that was peculiar being it was 1973 and her previous 45 was the stereo "You're So Vain").

So I bet it's the same mix as your DJ mono side.

Perhaps it wasn't bragging at all, but a clarification so buyers expecting stereo wouldn't be disappointed?

It was odd that the word MONO (or STEREO on Electra stereo 45s at the time) was in a bigger font and in heavier bold than the song title!

It was just a policy somebody (obviously not a marketer, probably an engineer) developed at the time.

My stock 45 of "Riders On The Storm" from 1971 has STEREO in bigger font too. As Bill indicated, it was probably a policy at Elektra at the time.

Here's food for thought - since the mono and stereo versions of "The Right Thing To Do" differ, could the MONO vs. STEREO indication be a way the label knew the difference in mixes?

Andy's hunch is correct about the mono mix appearing on the stock 45. I just had a chance to compare, and there are additional horns at 1:50 on the mono mix. On the stereo mix, starting at around 1:56, there is a prominent acoustic guitar overdub that is missing on the mono mix. We definitely have a "version" designation that needs to be added to the database, and currently all CD copies appear to be the stereo version.

My promo has TRTTD b/w "We Have No Secrets", both sides
labeled as mono. Never really noticed any mix differences,
but it never was one of my faves by her so I didn't pay much
attention.

Elektra/Asylum did that occasionally, my promo of Orleans'
"Let There Be Music" has LTBM in mono, but the B side "Give
One Heart" is stereo.
