On Rhino's "Soul Hits of the 70s, vol. 14" (and other CDs), the version of "Doctor's Orders" is referred to in the database as "neither the 45 or LP version". It has an instrumental section that is not on the 45 version. Is this instrumental section featured on the LP version (I don't have it) or was the instrumental part first made available on this Rhino CD? And is it accurate to say this version is an edit of the LP version?

I've come to like that instrumental interlude, as this Rhino CD was the first time I ever had this song on CD, so I'm just curious to know the origins of this part.

Revisiting this song for the first time in a long time, hearing the instrumental portion on my Time-Life disc, sounds like an overdub.

Thanks for the tip! Gave me a chance to edit it down to the 45 version and re-eq it too!

The version without the instrumental section was played on the radio back in 1974.

my commercial 45 issued as midland int'l 10113 lists the
run time on the label as 2:56 and does indeed run that
length.....you'll need to pitch up the cd version below

(S)     (2:56)   &nb sp; Varese Sarabande 302066465 Disco
Classics (45 version)

to match the vinyl 45's speed, but by doing that the song
runs 0:02 short at 2:54..

john, do you have a wave file of your edit so i can
compare it my vinyl 45?

Actually, I don't own the edit any more.

the45prof has posted a 45 of this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=mIhk3r30boQ) and it's mono (there's also another post that is mono). Our
review of stereo/mono 45s has this as stereo. Could it be in error, or perhaps it
was another "both"? ed, is yours stereo or mono?

Odd that the 45 is labeled as being stereo in the video if
the record played is mono. Did he play the mono side of a
promo 45 instead?

Did anyone get to the bottom of where that instrumental
section first appeared? I know I have it on some later '70s
Dance/Disco compilation LP, but I don't remember its title
(and it might not be its first issuance anyway).

eriejwg, he actually dubbed the "stereo" side of his promo 45, which as we
can hear, is mono.

The instrumental portion in the incorrect edit was on the LP. Since the 45
seems to have been mono, and the 45prof has informed me that his
stereo/mono promo is mono on both sides, a stereo master of the 45 likely
didn't exist. The first CD to get it right seems to have been 1992 Rhino "The
Disco Years (Boogie Fever) Volume Three". It was on 1976 US K-Tel LP TU
2430 "Block Buster" - I have no idea in what form it was on there.

So, could whoever indicated that the commercial 45 was stereo for our "list of
stereo/mono Top 40 hits for 1975" verify that?
