A while back, I pointed out in another message thread that Joel Whitburn lists the 45 run time of Robert Cray's "Smoking Gun" at 3:21 in his Pop Singles Annual 1955-1999 book, while all CD appearances to date run 3:57-4:06. Pat reported that his vinyl 45 has a printed and actual run time of 4:05, and that the word "long" is printed on the label face and etched in the runout groove as part of the matrix number. This lead us to believe there must be a different commercial 45 pressing of "Smoking Gun" out there consisting of a shorter length. Does anyone have one of these copies who can verify the run time and whether it is an edit or an early fade of the long 45 and LP?

Todd, my commercial 45 for "Smoking Gun" is exactly like Pat's: listed and actual (4:05), with "long" appearing in the deadwax. So I pulled out my promo, hoping for more clues. Turns out, "Smoking Gun (Long)" is on one side, and is the same version that is found on both Pat's and my commercial 45s. "Smoking Gun (Short)", however, has a listed time of (3:21) and an actual time of (3:20). So a "short" version does exist, at least on a promo 45. It wouldn't surprise me a bit, however, if our buddies, Mr. Whitburn and Mr. Haney happen to own a commercial 45 pressing of this short version, currently stored up in beautiful Menomonee Falls, WI!

Pat asked me about this one awhile back. Our commercial copy is exactly like Pat & Jim's. Don't know if the shorter version ever got a commercial release.

Is the short promo version extractable from the long
promo/stock version?
