According to the database, commercial 45 copies of Autograph's "Turn up the Radio" run 4:28, while the song is shown with a time of 4:35 on the band's parent LP/CD Sign in Please (RCA 5423). Can anyone shed some light on what accounts for this :07 discrepency in run time between the 45 and LP? (Early fade? Edit? Speed difference?) Chances are, the database will need to be updated to explain this difference.

The 45 runs (4:32) not (4:28) as stated on the record label so the timing difference between the LP and 45 is only :03.

The 45 promo PB-13953 has a 3:46 Short Version and 4:28 Long Version times printed on the label.

Guys, joining us on the Board is the ONE person I know who has more promo 45s/CD singles than I do. Through radio, I have known him for 30 years, although he found the Board on his own. Both his collection and knowledge will be a tremendous asset to the Board. Although he was once a wild DJ, under this name, he has long ago moved on to the engineering side of radio. He is currently very much in demand as one of the top chief engineers in the country, at several different stations. One of them is my alma mater's station, every Wednesday. Smokin' Tom, I will call you Saturday at home, my friend, give you some background on this Board, and catch up on things in general. A warm welcome to you here, sir!

Indeed, welcome, Tom! Jim has been a tremendous resource on this board for information regarding DJ edits, so I imagine you'll have no problems making quick friends on this message board with your vast resources and background. I look forward to more posts from you!

When this song first hit, I bought the 45 and I thought I
remembered it stating it was a special longer mix. I later bought the LP and I didn't hear much difference, so I got the rid of the 45. Since the database shows the LP/45 as being basically the same version, I figured I recalled wrong about the 45. I was just on the 45cat database site, and a saw a label scan of the 45, and it says nothing about the version, again seeming to confirm I recalled wrong. BUT, there is also a scan of the picture sleeve, front and back. On the back of the sleeve it reads "Special Extended Mix". Aha! Now I remembered... the intro to the song does indeed sound extended. The mix is slightly different in the intro, all the way to about :42 secs, where it sounds like it splices into the original mix. So I just played the "DJ 45 Edit" and I notice the guitar intro before the beat starts is completely different from the commercial version. It is a 4.5 second intro. The commercial version has a different 3 sec intro. So you cannot edit the 45/LP to get the DJ edit. My theory is that the version on several CD's listed as the "DJ 45 Edit but :12 longer" may actually be the original intended LP version. |

I believe we need to revisit this topic. Check out this link. This version is
called the “Radio Short Edit” and it runs (4:03) but I timed it around (3:58). https://youtu.be/CxbPb-jXBfk This is the “Album Rock Radio Guitar Mix” which is listed as running (4:28), but i timed it around (4:33).I am assuming this is the B-side to the (3:46) “Short Version.” https://youtu.be/Q6SBwetngMw I’m guessing these need to be added to the database. Also, I’m a little confused. The 45 version is the “Special Extended Mix”. The album version is a tad shorter, but the theory is that the 45 Version could’ve been meant to be the original album version and instead it’s a few seconds shorter? |

I'll pull my promo 45, but I'm 99.9% certain the actual run time of the Short Version is 3:47, give or take a second. I don't have the promo 12", but it's very likely the same "special extended mix" that ended up on the commercial 45 and LP.

I just gave a listen to the YouTube link with a dub of the promo 12", and yes, it sounds like the 45/LP version. As for the video with the 3:58 length (Radio Short Edit), that sounds like someone's homemade version. I'm only listening on laptop speakers, but it seems like someone spliced the unique intro onto the LP version and then just quickly faded out at 3:58. The song dumps out really fast at the end.
