Ed: Thanks for that info - the song was so big at our station, it made our 1985 Top 100 songs of the year. I've been lookin' for that 45 version on CD for many years now.

Can the LP version of "Object of My Desire" be edited to match the 45 version?

Todd:
My Spun Gold 45 (7-65973) says at the bottom under Starpoint - Special Version of Elektra LP 60424. Not sure if this means an edit or a remix. |

I used my Spun Gold 45, and the LP version I got from I-Tunes (the
Restless LP), and I was able to edit the LP version down to the 45. I can't detect any obvious mix differences (although my actual 45 is in VG++ shape, so unless someone can point out a difference, I would say you can edit the LP version down. |

It runs 5:40 |

Back in the 90s, the station I worked for carried "Backtraxx USA". Usually one song featured in the show was included in the clear on disc 2 of the show. OOMD was was on one show...I ripped the song into our automation system to use for mid-day gold or when we did an 80s weekend. Imagine my surprise to discover that it was not only a needle drop, but there was a skip in the song like someone bumped into the turntable when they were dubbing it! Grrr. Edited by Hykker |

Score! Not only did I find the elusive Restless CD (Elektra 60424-2, 1985, "Made In West Germany By Polygram"), I reverse-engineered the 45 edit. The 45 version of "Object Of My Desire" has been at the top of my wish list for over a decade.
First, the LP version has a printed run time of 5:00, and an actual run time of 5:03. It runs at 116.1 BPM throughout, with no tempo drifts and no obvious edits. Here are instructions for recreating the 45 edit, based on the (admittedly elusive) LP version on Restless: Remove the opening beats from 0:00 to 0:04.48 of the LP version. Segment 1: Is about 1-1/2 beats long; is just the opening slide sound. This segment ends on a downbeat. Extends from 0:04.48 to 0:05.32 of the LP version. Extends from 0:00 to 0:00.83 of the 45 edit. Remove the 16 beats from 0:05.31 to 0:13.58 of the LP version. Segment 2: Is 30 beats long, extending from a downbeat to a bass drum hit (2 beats before the true downbeat). Extends from 0:13.58 to 0:29.08 of the LP version. Extends from 0:00.83 to 0:16.33 of the 45 edit. Remove the 16 beats from 0:29.08 to 0:37.35 of the LP version. Segment 3: Is 99 beats long, extending from a bass drum hit (2 beats before the true downbeat) to a snare hit at the syllable "ject" in the chorus. Extends from 0:37.35 to 1:28.52 of the LP version. Extends from 0:16.33 to 1:07.50 of the 45 edit. Remove the 32 beats from 1:28.52 to 1:45.06 of the LP version. This extends from "ject" to "ject". Segment 4: Is 316 beats long, extending from a snare hit on "ject" to the snare hit after the word "on". Extends from 1:45.06 to 4:28.30 of the LP version. Extends from 1:07.50 to 3:50.75 of the 45 edit. Remove the 64 beats from 4:28.30 to 5:01.37 of the LP version. This extends from a snare hit to a snare hit. Segment 5: Extends from 5:01.37 to 5:06.47 (end) of the LP version. Extends from 3:50.75 to 3:55.84 (end) of the 45 edit. Your mixdown will run 3:53, with edits at 0:00.83, 0:16.33, 1:07.50 and 3:50.75. Someone at Elektra deserves applause for coming up with this really tight edit of the song. Solid. (Recreating it was pretty easy; the track has plenty of dynamic range, and following the waveform on the screen was particularly easy. One of the easiest tracks I've ever worked on.) There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

With the song only making it to #89 on the Billboard Hot
100, I couldn't justify a separate thread for 1987's "He Wants My Body," but for Starpoint fans, to make the single edit from the LP version: Remove the first 8 seconds; leave one beat before the keyboards start. Cut out 3:12 to 3:29; on the end of the word "body" on the 4th beat of the measure. Cut out 3:30 to 3:38; on the the word "wants" and beat. The LP version fades properly, giving you a final song length of just over 4 minutes. |
