After listening to the first 10 seconds of the 45, it is TOTALLY obvious to me that this is NOT the same version found on the stereo CDs. The 45 starts off with a sparse, few early sounds, all boosted up MUCH louder and hotter (hey, everything's relative - we are talking Ferrante & Teicher here!) early in the 45; whereas the stereo versions have MUCH more of the full orchestra participating, even from the very first note. FYI, the listed (3:20) 45 running time is correct.

Does that apply to the version found on Rhino's Billboard's Top Movie Hits of the 1970s CD (maybe it's me but other than one long held string note I don't hear a great deal of orchestration behind the opening guitars)?

Doug, I checked their best-quality "best-of" CD before posting. I do have that Rhino 70's V/A CD here somewhere - if ANYONE would have it correct, a "special themed" package, on a decent re-issue label would likely be the place - V/A's take me a while to locate, but I will. And I'll be able to tell RIGHT away. I'll follow up with you.

Thanks, Jim. And if you have problems locating it, I can forward you a copy this evening if need be.

Found it, Doug. Bad news for you, my friend. There's not a STRING to be found in the opening seconds on the 45 version, but they are noticably present on the "Billboard Top Movie Hits: 1970's" version of it. Start hunting down that 45!

Drat! I have the Billboard Top Movie Hits: 1970s disc so I had my hopes up that it might contain the 45 version of "Midnight Cowboy". Guess I have yet another title to add to my "Want List".

Thanks! Found a nice copy today pressed on Vinyl. Columbia Santa Maria, CA made. No strings audible. Very unusual mix. My copy was cheap and very nice condition. Thanks for pointing out this unusual single version.

Has anyone found the mono single mix on CD? If not, was the LP ever issued in mono with this mix? I've struck out several times on finding a nice sounding 45. Most copies I've come across sound like they were pressed on cardboard.
