I revisited "Mr. Tambourine Man", and concluded that the mix on Columbia's Pop Classics Of The '60s (1989) is not fake stereo, but is an absurdly narrow real stereo mix. There's real panning for the instruments and vocals, even though the panning is ridiculously close to dead-center for everything. This narrow stereo mix first appeared on the stereo Mr. Tambourine Man LP back in 1965.
As to why such a narrow stereo mix exists, I have no idea. But it's not fake stereo, as I'd assumed earlier. I updated my post above to reflect that it's narrow stereo, not fake stereo. |
