Someone had mentioned on another forum that the some stations edited the gunfire in this song.

Was there an official DJ edit?

I checked each of my vinyl copies and all contain the gunfire. I recall, however, that both WABC and WMCA played only the "version" that edited all of the gunfire near the end of the song. I remember being surprised when I bought the Epic 45 and heard the gunfire.

Another interesting thing that I noticed when listening to the various vinyl versions in my collection is that I have a version where, although the song is in mono (actually it sounds a bit "electronically reprocessed" as opposed to mono), the gunfire near the end of the song and the sirens and other sound effects during the instrumental break are in stereo. This version is on a British import 5-LP box set titled "Hit Of The '60's" (Innovative Music Productions, Ltd. IMP-0106).
