I was wondering if anybody listens to some of the Dolby
Atmos stuff that Apple Music's catalog has?

I'm not sure how I feel about it, stereo is still my go-to
for music, but what I do find exciting is that many of the
releases are actually remixed when they give it the Atmos
treatment.

For example, every track on Whitney Houston's "Whitney"
sounds different on the Atmos issue. It could almost pass
as a remix album. There are even different vocal takes
(e.g. "Didn't We Almost Have It All" and "I Wanna Dance
With Somebody").

The same goes for her compilation "I Will Always Love You:
The Best Of Whitney Houston". To name an example, on
"Greatest Love of All" there are background vocals added
throughout the song, which were absent on the original
album and single versions.

I have also checked a few Celine Dion albums released on
Atmos, and you can clearly hear new sounds in most of the
tracks.

Some tracks such as Heart's "Alone" though, sound if not
the same, very close to its stereo version.

Anyway, if anybody is interested in checking it out, there
is tons of stuff from different decades and genres.

Thanks for bringing this up!

I had bought the Atmos plug-in on my previous computer. Since I have updated to another machine, I completely forgot about it. I'll have to see if I will be charged an update fee.

I actually enjoyed the environment when in headphone mode. I didn't notice, or pay much attention to the effect on speaker mode. It may have been just a headphone use item.

My pleasure Dave! The way I understand it, for headphone
listening, in order to decode the Atmos spatial sound, you
need to have Atmos compatible headphones (e.g. Apple
Airpods Pro, but there are other brands out there) and the
same goes for your home theater/PC and speaker setup. I
tried the speaker Atmos experience, and it's pretty cool as
far as the spatiality of the sound, but not that far off
from a "classic" discrete surround recording. Without
compatible headphones or speakers, you can still listen to
the remixed tracks and there is a different depth to the
stereo field, but you will not hear the surround effect,
which for Atmos is basically surround + height audio. I
have never tried the experience with headphones since mine
are not Atmos compatible. But it's supposed to be similar
to the speaker Atmos listening experience. I may buy Atmos
compatible headphones to give that a try, I'm curious as to
how it compares to an Atmos speaker setup, it's supposed to
be just as good but I'm a bit skeptic.
