Just discovered that "Rump Shaker" on the "Entertainment
Weekly 1992" compilation masks a few vocals - replacing
"sharp sword" and "stickin' it to her" with other audio
from the song.

This is listed in the db as LP version but I don't think
those lyrics are masked on the original CD -- can anyone
confirm? I know the 45 has the original lyrics.

Those lyrics are definitely in the LP version from Hard Or Smooth, so it's probably worth noting in the database that the EW 1992 CD has an "edited" version.

I was poking around on Discogs and noticed that there are three catalog number variations for the album. The standard US CD is MCAD 10566, and 10566 is the same number on most releases worldwide. But here's what's strange:

• The Columbia House mail-order edition for some reason has an asterisk after it: https://www.discogs.com/release/18978433-Wreckx-N-Effect-Hard-Or-Smooth/image/SW1hZ2U6NjA4MTY0ODc= - MCAD 10566* .
• There's a https://www.discogs.com/release/7412135-Wreckx-N-Effect-Hard-Or-Smooth - separate US CD (and cassette) release where the number contains 10792 instead of 10566.

There's not enough detail entered to distinguish them further. I'm totally speculating here, but there may be revised/edited content on these oddly numbered items. More investigation is needed.

Incidentally, when the song was a hit and the album first came out, https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1992-11-29-ca-2538-story.html - MCA & the artists rejected the idea of making a censored video for MTV .
“What’s the point?” Riley asked. “The single’s already a smash hit. Why spend that money now?”

The edit on the EW disc sounded pretty awkward, plugging in vocals
from elsewhere in the song, so I suspect it originated with the
compilation producers.

Funny that in a song as suggestive as this, these two phrases crossed
some threshold that the rest didn’t.

I highly doubt there's an official censored version.

I remember the Hard Or Smooth cassette tape being one of the most disappointing purchases as a 7th grader. MTV was playing the video all the time, which has the excellent sample of "Blind Alley" by The Emotions. Little did I know that the video uses a version called "Teddy 2," a remix. The LP version and similar sounding Radio Mix just don't cut it for me. I finally tracked down the Teddy 2 remix years later, and that's the definitive version to me.

Where did you find the Teddy 2 remix Aaron?

Favorite two expressions to live by on this board: "You can't download vinyl" and "Not everything is available on CD."

You're right -- I'd forgotten about that. I hadn't heard
that in years!

Can't speak for Aaron but it seems to be the lead track on
the 12" and also appears on the promo CD.

Correct, it's on the 12" and promo CD single, as well as import CD single.
