There's a promo CD of Doubleback by ZZ Top that has a
single version and an edit. The single version is listed
as 3:57 and the edit at 2:45. Is there any way to make
this edit. Is it a fade or a cut from the single or LP
version?

I can't believe this only hit #50 in Billboard, but this is what I can add. Both the 45 RPM single and the
version on ZZ Top's Greatest Hits CD both state 3:57 and both time out at 3:55. There appears to be no mix
differences EXCEPT the channels are reversed on the 45. Or, are the channels reversed on the CD?? As far as a
2:45 edit, I can't help you there. -Bill.

After a couple minutes of research, 'Doubleback' was received in my record store on 5/08/1990. It wasn't released on
CD until 'Recycler' which is October 1990. So, I guess the channels are reversed on the CD. -Bill.

The promo CD contents are as follows:

PRO-CD-4074
1. Single Version (listed 3:57; actual 3:54)
2. Edit (listed 2:45; actual 2:46)

Regarding the "Single Version," Bill is exactly right that there are no mix differences, and yes, the channels are also swapped on the promo CD single when compared to the Recycler and Greatest Hits CDs.

As for the "Edit," this version has the channels swapped from the "Single Version." In other words, the channels are the same between the "Edit" and the versions appearing on Recycler and Greatest Hits. To create the "Edit" using the 3:55 full-length version:

1) Delete 1:39 to 1:55 of the guitar solo (edit on the snare hit).
2) With what you have remaining, delete 2:19 to 2:35 with the edit on the downbeat and in the middle of the word "again." (The edit point is just before "gain" in "again" and will be the segment from 2:35 to 2:50 in the full length version.)
3) Finally, fade out from 2:31 to 2:46 of what you have left after making both edits.
