The very long titled "A Nite At The Apollo Live! The
Way You Do The Things You Do/My Girl" was a Top 25 Pop
hit (# 20 Billboard, # 22 Cashbox, #24 R&R) in 1985.
The physical 45 credits "Daryl Hall John Oates," but
the picture sleeve also credits David Ruffin and Eddie
Kendrick. So, the debate - should or shouldn't this
single be considered part of the official chart
histories of Kendrick and Ruffin?

I would also say yes, since Hall & Oates are essentially background singers on the song. Plus, it's on the "20th Century Masters" discs of both Ruffin & Kendrick.

How does Record Research determine who should and
should not be credited for a song? I have always
leaned toward the physical single (45, cassingle, CD).
The artwork is always replaceable. (I even recall
back in the days of the 45 that picture sleeves were
often unavailable if you tried purchasing a single
later in its chart run.) But, the label is not and,
to me, permanently provides the single's intended
credits.

Of course, that does not resolve whether artists like
Kendrick and Ruffin should be credited when their
contributions are so apparent, but the label does not
acknowledge that. At least they are mentioned on the
45 label as part of the album title. Did record
companies ever provide Billboard or other chart
publications with "official" credits? Billboard
credited this song to "Daryl Hall & John Oates"
(although they lost the "&" by then) on the published
charts, but the song title was also abbreviated to
exclude "A Nite At The Apollo Live!" (Just so much
space on the page to list this!)

Using that rationale, Kenny Rogers has included "What
Are We Doin' In Love" on some of his compliations. But,
he was never credited on the 45 or on the charts for
this song.

(Can you tell this topic flusters me?!?) :-)

Joel used to go by whatever was on the official record
label and would just put in a trivia note for any
additional vocalists. (FWIW, I always agreed with this
philosophy, but he's the author, so he makes the final
decisions).

In recent years, he's been more inclined to go by the
actual recording itself. Thus, Kenny Rogers gets credit
for "What Are We Doin' In Love", Sheena Easton gets
credit for "U Got The Look", and there are many more such
examples.

Of course, with all "featuring" credits in recent years,
we've tried to sort out the actual duets from the 10
second rap ones, which is a never-ending job every week.

So, in short, there's no easy answer to this dilemma. I
guess it comes down to personal preference.

Does anyone know the origin of the version of
this song that appears on the VA Compilation,
"Hi Octane: Hard Drivin' Hits"? For those who
have never heard it, it cuts out the fade in
from the single version and opens cold with
the horn intro of "The Way You Do The Things
You Do". It also fades out while "My Girl" is
still being sung whereas the single fades out
with audience applause. Trying to figure out
if this version was released anywhere else or
maybe a special edit that was done for some
reason.

Thanks Kaqueno, I figured it was an edit of
the LP Version, I just wanted to see if it had
been released anywhere else prior to this VA
Compilation. I looked at some of the other
configurations of the single on Discogs and
couldn't find any that match the running time
of this version (about 5:45). The closest I
could find was the A-Side of the US 12" Single
which states a running time of 7:00.
