just wondering if anyone has any input/idea how one would
alphabetize some of the new artists that are making the
charts nowadays...such as the below list...
august alsina or alsina, august?
vance joy or joy, vance?
tove lo or lo, tove?
bobby shmurda or shmurda, bobby?
rae sremmurd or sremmurd, rae?
i love makonnen or ilovemakonnen?

A lot of it depends on if it's a group name or a person's name. I was told Tove is a first name (Israeli), so she would be "Lo, Tove". Same is true for "Shmurda, Bobby" - unless of course, this is a group, like Jethro Tull (which would be under J), then this would be under S. Wikipedia should sort out which of these acts are groups or solo artists. As for your last entry, I would go with however they list their name on their CDs or website. For instance, I always go with OneRepublic as one word, not two, because that's the way the group spells their name. The same goes with this group you list. I don't know ilovemakonnen but if you've seen ilovemakonnen spelled that way, I would go with it. Another good source is Billboard and the Hot 100. I take it this is a top 40 hit so if Billboard uses spaces or doesn't, then I would do the same.

Good advice.
I always alphabetize by last name if it's a person
(Taylor Dayne), otherwise by first letter if
it's a group (Danny Wilson).
If the group starts with a number, I alphabetize by
what the number would be if I wrote it out (38 Special
alphabetized as if it were Thirty-Eight
Special).
I always drop "The" at the beginning of group names
(The Clash alphabetized under Clash). I keep
"A" or "An" because there are so few of them (A
Flock Of Seagulls, An Emotional Fish). I put
The The in the T's.
I eliminate weird punctuation (Mike + The Mechanics
becomes Mike And The Mechanics).
For groups that have altered their names at one point
or another (duranduran, matchbox twenty, AWB, ELO,
John Cougar), I use the spelling that they used during
their heyday. I put all of Miami Sound Machine under
Gloria Estefan And Miami Sound Machine, and all
of John Cougar's output under John Cougar
Mellencamp.
As time goes on and I rely more and more heavily on
the digital library on my hard drives, I worry less
about alphabetizing and more about making sure that
when I query an artist, I get everything that the
artist released. So "Hurts So Good" is listed under
John Cougar Mellencamp, so that if I query Cougar or
Mellencamp, I get a hit.
At one point, I had a checklist of steps to follow for
naming the artists and titles for the files in my
library. I don't know where that checklist is, but it
boils down to dropping a leading The, using And to
replace weird punctuation, dropping the artist name
from album titles (The Best Of The Spinners
becomes Best Of), and capitalizing each word
unless it's really in the name (k.d. lang, but I use
A-Ha instead of a-ha). It's all about making sure
that the library queries pick up what they're supposed
to.

I've kind of gone back & forth and round & round on this
myself. In my database I decided to file Tove Lo as such
(under T), likewise someone like Jay-Z under "J" or LL Cool J
under "L".
Most of these could go either way, whatever makes the most
sense for you.
