Yes, there was one, although I don't own it. I used to play it on the air when it was a hit.

Ed, back in 1996 I had hunted high, low, backwards, frontwards and sideways for a promo CD single of "I Go Blind", with no luck at all. The song was originally available only as a "non-LP, flip side" of their first hit single, "Hold My Hand." "I Go Blind" was a huge hit for us at our station. We never received a promo CD single into our station, so we had to play the track on-the-air off of the full "Friends" CD that Reprise sent us. I remember that the band's label, Atlantic, was working the group's, "Old Man & Me" follow-up single, "Tucker's Town" very hard to us, and they were getting frustrated that "I Go Blind" was getting in the way of the marketing efforts of their second album, "Fairweather Johnson", which Atlantic was trying very hard to make as huge an album for them as their debut LP, "Cracked Rear View", was. But I have been surprised before, Ed, with the recent discovery of a "Word To The Mutha" promo CD single, for example, which our local MCA rep had specifically told me did not exist back in the early 90's. We were always lucky to receive full & complete record service from the major labels. Aaron's earlier comment is an absolute stunner to me, truth be told, so maybe there was, since he is such a very reliable source for us. Aaron, do you happen to remember if the promo CD single you played was on Reprise or Atlantic? But Ed, I promise you, there were VERY few 90's songs that I had tried harder to get/find a promo CD single for than "I Go Blind", with absolutely no luck, my friend.

Sorry, I missed the replies to this post quite a while back. Given that it has been 13 years since I would've seen the promo CD, I can't say with 100% certainty on this one. Our station played a combination of promo CD singles and Chartbreakers compilations (a weekly CD service for radio similar to HitDisc). Now that I think about it, I'm believe our station played "I Go Blind" from a Chartbreakers CD. However, there were several cases where we DID get a promo CD but still used the Chartbreakers disc, which saved space in the studio having several hits on the same CD.
Assuming that I am not mistaken about its existance, the promo would've been on Reprise. I know for certain that the other Friends single, "Good Intentions" by Toad the Wet Sprocket, does exist on promo CD. It's a 1-track with catalog number PRO-CD-7828. Admittedly, though, it's possible that I am mistaking "I Go Blind" for this promo.
In any case, did the Friends soundtrack version have dialog over the intro or outro? That would certainly be a clue that a promo might exist, because the version we played on the air did not have any dialog. That much I am 100% certain of.

the song "i go blind" is on the B-side of the commercial cassingle of "hold my hand" and is listed a "non-lp bonus track" with no listed running time but runs 3:10....and is identical to the version that is on the "friends" cd soundtrack and has NO voice overs....

Thanks for the info, Ed. For now, I'm going to admit that my memory must not be the greatest on this one.

In another thread, Jim shared a great story about this song, including details as to why it was never released on a promo CD. I'm only bringing this thread back up to add that I've obtained the full-length "advance CD" of the Friends soundtrack, and it appears to be identical to the retail copy, except that the back insert is a plain white with black lettering. (The front insert and disc look like the retail copy.)
The only potential difference I'm hearing is that on "I Go Blind" there is no dialog that "briefly tracks over the introduction," as Pat currently notes in the database. On my copy, the dialog at the end of the previous track and the beginning of "I Go Blind" are definitely very tight with no dead space in between; however, I'm not hearing any overlapping.
