The commercial 45 is the same as the LP version.

It looks like there is only one analog transfer of the song, based on the (admittedly small number of) CDs I own with the song. Fortunately, the one analog transfer sounds very good.

It appeared on CD first on Riva's American Fool. There are five digital clones of the American Fool version on:
  • PolyGram's Hear The Light Vol. 1 (1984; diff EQ'd digital clone, off by fraction of a sample so can't get complete cancellation in a null test)
  • The Best That I Could Do 1978-1988 (1997; about 6 dB louder with a different EQ, and clips quite a bit)
There's an edit of the LP version on Swaitek's The A List Disc 14 (1994), but it's not the promo 45 edit. At least there's no NR.

Here are instructions for recreating the promo 45 edit, using American Fool as the source:

Remove the first 16 beats from 0:00.0 to 0:09.4 of the commercial 45/LP version.
Edit on the downbeat.

Segment 1:
Extends from 0:00.0 to 2:44.0 of the promo 45 edit
Extends from 0:09.4 to 2:53.4 of the commercial 45/LP version
This segment begins with a strong guitar strum on downbeat, and ends with a downbeat that's exactly 4 beats after the downbeat that has the first syllable of the word "women"

Remove the 8 beats from 2:53.4 to 2:58.0 of the LP version.

Segment 2:
Extends from 2:44.0 to 3:50.3 of the promo 45 edit
Extends from 2:58.0 to 4:04.3 of the commercial 45/LP version
This segment begins on a downbeat that's 8 beats before the pronounced end of the drum break, and ends on an accented hand clap.

Fade:
16 beats long
Extends from 3:41.1 to 3:50.3 of the promo 45 edit
Added at points that would correspond to 3:55.1 to 4:04.3 of the LP version

Your mixdown will run 3:50.3, with just one edit at 2:44.0.
