my commercial 45 for the manfed mann song "quinn the
eskimo' issued as mercury states the run time on the label
as 2:51 but only runs 2:49 like some of the db
entries...also, my top 40 book lists the song as 'mighty
quinn (quinn the eskimo)', but my label just says 'quinn
the eskimo'....i see on ebay that there is three different
vinyl 45 labels.....one is all red with mercury in an oval
printed in white, one that is red with a black ribbon on
the left, then there is the orange and mustard swirl
version...anyone know which label was originally issued
when the record hit the charts in march of 1968?

The short answer is: all of them.
Mercury was on the orange and mustard swirl label by that point but the record was such a massive hit that the pressing plants were using up older Mercury label stock as the current labels ran out just to keep the production runs up. I've also seen copies of the disc on the early 60's all black label (which Mercury had stopped using for new releases in 1964) as well as an all white label (which I assume may have been used for promotional copies however I have not seen any labeled as such).

Promo copies were labeled as such (or at least mine is).

The white label copy I have in my personal collection came from a radio station and has tons of writing on the A side label (mentioning the "new" title, etc) but nowhere is it mentioned that it is actually a promotional copy. I don't think I've ever seen a real promo copy for the record.
