here's one for paul haney at record research regarding the
song superwoman/superwoman pt II by lil mo issued as
eastwest 67171....my top 40 book has both songs as separate
entries...superwoman entered the top 40 on 5-12-01 and
peaked at number 34 for 1 week, then pt II peaked at #11 as
was in the top 40 for 13 weeks.....but...in the hot 100
annual there is no entry in the peak slot of number 34 for
superwoman....why wouldn't that song get it's own
slot....it wasn't just a b-side it was a legitimate a-side
for one week.....any info would be welcomed....

It looks like Paul anticipated your inquiry Ed, as this was updated in the 8th
edition of Pop Annual (1955-2011), which does have "Superwoman" at #148
for the year (peak position #34).

Ed, if my memory is correct, Part 1 began getting airplay on urban radio
stations, but after a couple weeks, they all started playing Part 2.
Rhythmic CHR stations also played Part 2. Without actually looking at
the weekly Billboard charts during the song's chart run, I'm guessing
this was a case where after it made the top 40, they decided Part 2 was
the bona fide hit version and changed the way it was listed. Therefore,
it wasn't really two separate chart runs for Parts 1 and 2. Hopefully Paul
can confirm, but I'm betting the book with Part 1 listed separately is just
an error.

And it also looks like I'm completely wrong!

Not completely wrong, Aaron... the chart run does in fact seem to back your
theory. "Superwoman" debuted on the Hot 100 on 3/31/01, and steadily
climbed until reaching #34 in it's 7th week. On the chart of 5/19/01, the
listing was changed to "Superwoman Pt. II" featuring Fabolous (with
songwriters and producers also adjusted) as it climbed to #24, but Billboard
linked its previous weeks' positions and total weeks on to the original.
(Something similar happened on the R&B chart, as "Superwoman" made it as
high as #9 before switching to "Superwoman Pt. II" on 5/19 for the remainder
of its run).

So, it looks like Record Research treated the single as one song in the
previous edition of Hot 100 Annual, and as two separate songs in the
latest edition. Either way could be correct depending on your viewpoint.

(And no, I don't work for Record Research, so I'd also welcome Paul to chime
in with the real inside scoop!)
